Arup has made a significant commitment to sustainability in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry by pledging to conduct whole life carbon assessments (WLCA) for all its building projects. This initiative is part of a broader industry movement toward responsible resource management and sustainable development. The creation of "Zero," a digital platform for carbon assessment, reflects Arup's dedication to influencing design practices and decision making toward the reduction of carbon emissions. The platform benefits from data gathered from 1,000+ projects worldwide, and has been showcased at the Global Building Forum. This session will provide an overview of collaborative efforts (including those with Autodesk) aimed at standardizing a WLCA data schema and methodologies; resolving disparities between global and local carbon data sources' using digital technology to capture, store, and enhance data quality; and extracting design recommendations from data analytics to promote global sustainability efforts.

Let's face it, emissions from the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry are too high and one of the key issues is there are no agreed-upon processes for measuring embodied carbon. Join this panel discussion to hear a deep dive into how a group of companies conducted a proof of concept (POC) to address this complexity. Under the auspices of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, Autodesk and six AEC leading companies—AECOM, Arcadis, Arup, Foster + Partners, Ramboll, and SOM—spent more than six months on this POC. The cohort of building information modeling (BIM) and sustainability experts from the various firms investigated the processes behind translating BIM data into material quantities to measure embodied carbon (EC). The goal: Identify best practices toward establishing industry-wide guidelines for EC analysis to create actionable benchmarks. Join this fascinating technical discussion into how we aligned, agreed on assumptions, and drew conclusions.
