University College London at Here East, a new manufacturing center in east London opened in 2018, hosts a new master’s degree in design for manufacture uniquely within a school of architecture. Equipped with industrial robots, computer numerical control (CNC) milling and turning machines for fabrication and structural frames, large-scale metrology, and climate chambers for testing, UCL at Here East strives to cultivate an environment with students at the interface between a design studio and the point of industrial production. How might the well-established methods for manufacturing in automotive and aerospace be used in construction? This session will present an educator’s approach of “model-make-measure,” showing how the course connects students with the properties of materials used to construct buildings and the fabrication processes these materials undergo existing as nominal digital design intent. Examples will show how this approach has suggested novel design outcomes and ways of working, offering skills transferrable to the construction industry.

How often have you made a simple change to a part file in Inventor software, only to return to the assembly—which EXPLODES! We know that this has happened to you—it's happened to the speaker, too! In this class, we will learn simple and effective strategies for building parametric, stable assemblies that can easily be updated. We will discuss best practice for structuring assemblies and how to scale when working with large assemblies. We will learn how to use relationships effectively, and when to use the alternatives. We will learn how to prepare a design for “top down” parametric change, and how we can trigger changes using iLogic. Finally, we will learn how to document our design intent to ensure that our colleagues can work with our assemblies as effectively as we can.

The complexities around digital twins are usually enough to make most tech enthusiasts in the architecture, engineering, and construction industries think twice before embarking upon their use. From setting up IoT hubs and sensors to linking them with intelligent models and hosting them in client-facing experiences, the concept can be daunting. However, developments in gaming engines and their innate customization and ability to craft a story and experience mean that they are fast becoming great tools in the creation of digital twins. In this talk, we will look at the steps and stages involved in creating a digital-twin experience using the Unreal Engine game machine, in addition to showcasing industry case studies. We will break down the steps, from linking models from packages such as Revit software and 3ds Max software, to connecting to simple sensor data and visualizing the output. Here we explore the toolset and process required to help you embark on your own first digital twin.

The interoperability between Autodesk Revit and Autodesk CFD can be challenging in a number of areas. Most Revit design models typically contain a high level of detail for construction, gaps in geometry, clashes, and other unresolved conflicts that can create issues when imported to the CFD environment. In this session, participants will learn how to develop and maintain a Revit model for geometry creation suitable for Autodesk CFD analysis using industry best-practices, and review examples of the type of Revit geometry that can be repurposed and what should be replaced. The session will also present methods of leveraging Revit's powerful data, visualization, coordination, and documentation functionality to enhance CFD development, design coordination, data management, and reporting.

Owner requirements are becoming more demanding. Designs are becoming more complex. The shortage of skilled labor continues to grow. And, meanwhile, construction's poor productivity rates fail to improve. How do we respond to this challenging industry landscape? So much of the conversation has revolved around BIM (Building Information Modeling); however, BIM is not the answer. It is, however, the beginning of the answer. In this session, we will explore how BIM, if properly implemented, can become a powerful enabler of efficiently and elegantly executed projects. We will dive into scan-to-BIM workflows, automated field construction, prefabrication, and industrialized construction. By drawing on experience implementing BIM on more than 500-plus projects, we’ll reveal trends and highlight successes and failures, so attendees will leave with a greater understanding of how to make the most of their intelligent models. Using the example of a recently delivered design of a 96,000-seat stadium featuring an enormous cable net roof, Mark will outline a unique approach to planning and implementing robust and efficient workflows that embrace the latest technological developments. The project was anchored in Autodesk Revit and Revit’s flexibility and openness was exploited to document and communicate a fully integrated building design with highly complex and irregular geometry. The class will introduce the application of “mass bespoke” thinking to a construction design project outlining how a change of mindset can demonstrably increase productivity and resilience to change. The handover of a 3D model is an old standard practice in the industrial plant market-one that nowadays has to be integrated with the Building Information Modeling (BIM) approach. This presentation will walk you through the journey that an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor took by implementing BIM inside its typical design workflow for an $800 million petrochemical plant in the Middle East. We will demonstrate how to perform civil and structural design using Revit software from conceptual up to construction documentation delivery, and how to take full advantage of 3D modeling for plant project coordination and information management. Thanks to this method of collecting and delivering model data in an efficient manner, it's possible to recognize potential risks, impacts, and conflicts-and to take action in order to bring the project to success. Finally, the class will briefly discuss the project and process BIM implementation benefits, together with the related risks for a general contractor.

We live in a world where our major challenge is to get more and more efficient in the way we work. For long, we have used 2D drawings as basis for communication, planning and construction, but we are heading for a new age where tools and software now allows us to eliminate the use of 2D drawings. In project planning, parametric design is one of the new major tools to increase project efficiency. We will show you how to use parametric models to develop projects faster, how models helps increase collaboration and how to control the process all the way to construction, eliminating the use of 2D drawings.

We will use real project examples from hydropower to show our work with parametric design in Infraworks, Revit and Dynamo, and how we are now conducting a large construction project in Norway without the use of 2D drawings.

This class will cover a total rebar workflow from design to installation in the field. The attendees will see how structural engineers working in Revit software and Tekla save up to 60% of their time by making a good rebar model together with production, not needing to make paper drawings or details (DWG™ and PDF). Come and see how Skanska Norway uses the model to order rebars directly from the supplier, and how the firm tracks the order by using a combination of Solibri and Navisworks software. See how Skanska uses BIM 360 Glue software as an information carrier for assembly on-site instead of drawings by using Navisworks and iConstruct. By using the BIM model in the field, the firm visualizes the construction and reduces rework and time.

By keeping the information in the cloud and providing access to owners earlier in the project, it is much easier to implement the changes than it is at a more traditional stage of the project. Learn different strategies for how to use this technology for different types of clients, from those who are familiar with AutoCAD software to those with more of 2D backgrounds. This class utilizes BIM 360 software on the web, AutoCAD Plant 3D, and Navisworks software.

The class will show the experience of BIM implementation with Revit in an architecture and engineering firm. The strategy and the investments to do, the possible problem and solutions, the schedule and the goals to achieve. The case studies and the pilot projects are essential to BIM implementation; this class will present many special real case studies from the Bulgari New Jewelry-Making Center (finalist at AEC Excellence Awards 2016) to the residences in Masdar City, showing the critical points and strengths of this BIM project.

During the process of designing and drafting, you often need to share your designs with clients who do not have AutoCAD software. In this class, we will learn how to share views electronically using the Autodesk cloud environment, as opposed to simply printing PDF/DWF files. These shared views are stored in the cloud to be viewed and commented on using any web-enabled desktop or mobile device. After sharing a drawing file, we will measure and mark up the design in the Viewer and send the design back to AutoCAD. We will also use the Drawing Compare command on the two versions of a drawing file to highlight the differences so that the clients can easily visualize them.

This session will focus on optimizing corridor modeling using custom subassemblies. The speaker will reveal how a single subassembly can be applied to different solutions in a variety of situations. We will discuss modeling peculiarities in rocky terrain (rock cut). The speaker will explain how to use Civil 3D software in early bridge designing and model coordination. Industrial piping design tools such as AutoCAD Plant 3D software are now sophisticated and mature tools in many capacities across the specification-driven, P&ID-validated, data-driven fronts. However, other disciplines are engaging with more-contemporary modes of design, communication speed, and risk reduction. This paper will discuss how complimentary computational-design processes can harness power from other disciplines such as 3D geometric dimensioning and tolerancing in product design, mesh backdrops originating from reality capture processes, intelligent AutoCAD-Plant-3D-to-Revit interoperations through APIs, through to the creation of specifications from legacy data fragments for seamless piping component file (PCF) imports.

365 Materials Challenge started as a case study to create realistic materials. The goal: create one physically based rendering (PBR) material per day. In this demo, we'll learn how Open Shading Language (OSL) maps and Arnold Renderer helped us achieve this goal. We'll explain how to make the transition from 3ds Max legacy maps to OSL maps, and describe some tips and techniques for making the best use of OSL maps. Then we'll show how to create photorealistic materials with Arnold Renderer with OSL maps and Arnold's Standard Surface. Then, we'll see how Autodesk’s Physical Material is the best software for studios and individuals handling multiple renderers. Last, we'll look at techniques for starting to use Arnold Renderer for architectural visualization, and explore why it is such a powerful tool.
