BIM (Building Information Modeling) has been around for more than a decade. Most firms and disciplines have already adopted it. Why aren’t we experiencing the promised ultimate profit of using it? This session will cover the main challenges facing each member of the BIM team. We’ll identify the challenges and discuss the means to avoid and overcome these issues. The class will go over examples encountered in our actual projects, discuss the extents of the damage created, and share the ways we overcame it.

IQL will show how there are different ways of working/interacting with the built environment and explain the integrated project delivery: client, project manager, and main contractor being 1 team with the same goal approach. We'll explain how we developed a strategy, managed the design, and delivered from concept design to project handover using different digital technologies at different stages. This class will demonstrate how we've created a strategy and EIR for a project that will run for the next 8 years and which will attract future tenants. We’ll show this from a project management point of view: management of the design stakeholders, management of design, BIM for master planning, quantification, the use of BIM for visualisation/VR, and BIM as a product to attract tenants. From a construction management view, we'll demonstrate trade design coordination, supply chain management/education, BIM on-site, 4D sequencing and construction optimisation, and BIM use for tenant engagement.

Cloud platforms continue to improve collaboration in the construction industry. However, not all processes have adjusted to seamlessly share information, respond to issues in real time, and deliver on the potential offered by cloud platforms. Skanska USA Building is an early adopter of BIM 360 Field software and BIM 360 Glue software, reaping the benefits offered by the tools. Additionally, the firm has implemented several software extensions to optimize the coordination workflow. In this presentation, Skanska will describe the process adjustments made from design reviews to 3D subcontractor coordination to shop drawing completion. These enhancements have reduced time, increased accountability, and improved communication across our project teams as teams as a whole. Further updates and improvements to processes and tools will also be described.

Clash detection is more than detecting the intersection of 2 or more objects. The Clash Detective is one of the most powerful tools in Navisworks Manage software. We will examine in detail how to solve firestop-related clashes and how to create consolidated submittals for government authorities. In a multiplatform workflow, you can use models from your preferred MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) application—like Fabrication CADmep software, AutoCAD MEP software, or Revit software—to generate a bill of material, and enable the tool to place hundreds of firestop objects automatically into your Building Information Modeling (BIM) model utilizing the Hilti plug-in for firestop. See how to quickly and easily include into your BIM model UL-Systems details; installation guidance; and X, Y, Z coordinates. Learn how to use Point Layout software to export data to a total station for easy and timesaving placement of cast-ins and sleeves on the construction site. Document the installation in the documentation system for later building operation and maintenance. This session features Navisworks Manage and AutoCAD MEP.

With the release of One AutoCAD software, you can now take your CAD projects on the go with AutoCAD web—the browser-based version of the original AutoCAD software. This course will show you how to set up your desktop installation of AutoCAD to work with A360 Drive, how to save to web and mobile, and how to use AutoCAD web in Google Chrome. You will also learn how to view and edit designs on the fly and in the field from a tablet or smartphone, and discover how to communicate your designs using Viewer. You will learn how to access the tools from any mobile browser, sync your files across devices, upload files on the go, and edit drawings from a mobile browser—or sync them back to the desktop for closer inspection. This session features AutoCAD, A360 Drive, AutoCAD web, the AutoCAD mobile app, and Viewer.

DPR Construction has been using reality capture technology to help build an atypical and complicated office building in downtown Pasadena, California. In this class, the audiences will learn how DPR implements data from UAV and laser scanning, not only for typical deliverables, such as floor flatness/levelness analysis, but also for unique applications, such as shoring-wall deviation analysis, design-change feasibility study, and location of cores and drills for constructability review. With post-tension cables, hundreds of miles of conduits inside the concrete decks, and a fast-paced schedule, the project presents numerous challenges to overcome. However, by utilizing reality capture data in ReCap Pro software and AutoCAD software, the virtual design and construction (VDC) team has brought great value to the design and construction team, had positive impacts on overall project performance, and provided a big return on investment to the owner. The class will cover these use cases and lessons, and highlight tips and tricks for working with reality capture data.

Doing 3D coordination can be challenging enough. Do it in a historic Chicago baseball stadium, which the team still needs to utilize, and "standard" workflows get tossed. Systems need to stay up and running. Fieldwork, observations, and verification of existing conditions can only happen during certain time frames. Some may opt to attempt to model the existing MEP/FP (mechanical, electrical, plumping, fire protection) conditions. However, when you have a very short time frame to get coordination done, coordinating with laser scan data comes into play. In this course, we will go over how we utilized laser scan data with Navisworks software and ReCap software to aid in our 3D MEP/FP coordination efforts. We’ll cover how we utilized ReCap files in Navisworks and vice versa (how we utilized Navisworks content in ReCap). There are some lessons learned and even some wish-list items that would make the process even better.

Emerging technologies—such as augmented reality (AR), reality capture, and wearable technology—are reducing project costs, improving communication and collaboration with remote teams, and letting us experience information in a way never possible before. In this presentation, we’ll share experiences from a large natural- and built-asset firm regarding how we’re using AR to deliver enhanced value to our clients in multiple ways: 1) on-site, full-scale AR design visualization; 2) 360-degree reality capture; and 3) hands-free remote communication and documentation. Attendees will learn the workflows for each application and value captured by clients and staff. Our examples will include integrations with Revit software, Navisworks software, and BIM 360 software, and we’ll examine use of hardware and software like Microsoft HoloLens, RealWear HMT-1, 360-degree cameras, VisualLive, Librestream Onsight Connect, and HoloBuilder.

This lab will walk students through an introduction to some advanced AutoLISP concepts and practices. Students will get a taste of reactors, VBA-style programming in AutoLISP, and advanced function and processes.

We can extend AutoCAD software in a number of ways, but many users are unsure of where or how to get started. In this lab you will create custom desktop icons, modify the ribbon and Quick Access toolbar, create and modify command aliases that you can use to start commands, and define tools and tool palettes to reduce repetitive drawing tasks. This lab will give you a solid foundation in some of the available customization features that AutoCAD software offers to help you become more productive when you return to your office.

ObjectARX technology is the premier API (application programming interface) that is supported by AutoCAD software, AutoCAD for Mac software, and the industry-specific AutoCAD software systems. If you need to access APIs that aren't exposed through AutoLISP programming language, if you want to create applications that are optimized for large data sets, or if you need to build efficient applications for Windows and Mac OS, ObjectARX technology may be the most efficient API for you. This session provides hands-on experience using Microsoft Visual Studio and Microsoft Visual C++ to create and build an ObjectARX technology project that can be loaded into AutoCAD software. Prior experience with C++ programming language is helpful, but it is not required. However, you should have experience with AutoLISP programming language or Managed .NET. AutoLISP programming language has been around for decades, yet there are many functions that often go undiscovered or forgotten by veteran AutoLISP programmers. While there are hundreds of AutoLISP programming language functions (thousands, if you count ActiveX), this class will focus on 21 functions that new developers often overlook and that veteran programmers often forget. All of the functions fit into 1 of several different themes, including function execution, object creation and manipulation, and error handling. We will also discuss loading LISP files, accessing variable values, and configuring contextual help.

If you already have the basic knowledge of the Sheet Set Manager and want to take it to the next level, then this class is for you. We will build on the basics of sheet sets and move into more-advanced topics of the software. The Sheet Set Manager (SSM) in AutoCAD software is your ultimate document management tool. In this advanced class, we will create a standard template using fields and links to populate the data throughout the entire design package. We will organize all of the sheets, add views including labels, and publish the entire set to a PDF, DWF, or plotter output when complete. At the end of this class, you will be able to take your existing company title blocks and create a template to use on all projects, increasing your productivity and efficiency on all current and future design projects

This class is filled with all the tips and tricks you'll need to create new linetypes in AutoCAD software. Yes, AutoCAD does supply us with several options for linetypes, including dashes, dots, and shapes. What about creating and designing custom lines based on your company CAD standards or specific project needs? In this class, you’ll learn how to create a compiled custom linetype library to be used for your company standard. Drawings need creativity and clarity. In this class, you’ll gain that innovative knowledge to create new linetypes that catapult your drawings to the next level. Throughout that time frame, we have continually adapted and fine-tuned our Sheet Set Manager templates (and support files) to not only provide flexibility for utilizing internal, project, or client-specific CAD standards, but also for ensuring conformance and standardization for all AutoCAD (and AutoCAD software-based) software output. Earned value tracking—a methodical approach to keeping your projects on track to meet tight deadlines—can help overcome these challenges. Earned value tracking helps the project teams answer tough questions regarding the health of the project and schedule. In this session, CJ Best, construction technology program manager, and Spencer Hobson, senior project engineer—both from leading MEP specialty contractor McKinstry—will share their approaches to accurately tracking field productivity. You’ll see how McKinstry uses the 3D model, project data, iPads, and software systems, including Assemble Systems, to manage project costs, material delivery, installation, scheduling, and inventory on multiple projects, including an innovative cancer treatment facility.
