Join this class to learn how to use the Revit API to develop a custom node to extend Dynamo for Revit by yourself. In this demonstration, we will show how to use the Dynamo custom node to automatically place Revit MEP Fabrication hangers according to the rules stored in a Microsoft Excel sheet. Dynamo for Revit does not support creation of Revit MEP fabrication parts with standard nodes, so in the sample, we’ll use a custom node developed via the Revit API. The custom node is developed on top of Revit Fabrication MEP API. The topic covers both Dynamo custom node and some Revit MEP Fabrication workflows driven by programming on top of the Revit API.

The Structural Precast Extension for Revit software is a powerful BIM-centered solution for modeling and detailing precast planar elements. It supports multiple stages of the precast workflow, and improves productivity for engineers, detailers, and fabricators. In this class, you will discover the possibilities when computational design meets structural precast designs. This lab will teach participants how to create Dynamo scripts to support automatization of structural precast designs and minimize manual and tedious work.

This class will cover using Dynamo with Fabrication Parts. It will be an intermediate class, which assumes attendees know the basics of Dynamo. We will add parameters to Fabrication Parts, look at the nodes available for Fabrication Parts, and build a few scripts to automate processes in Revit software. At the end of this class, we will look at additional possibilities for Dynamo within the Revit environment that will increase your departments’ productivity.

This class will introduce Fabrication users to Dynamo software, a possible solution for Fabrication scripting users in the Revit environment. We'll cover some of the basics of how Dynamo works, how to set it up for multiple users in an organization, and the basics of filtering for parts. We'll make changes to these parts, like adding parameters, which now makes them schedulable. At the end of this class, we'll look at additional possibilities for Dynamo, which should give users reasons to explore it in more detail.

The rapid evolution of design technology, software, and cloud services changes how architectural offices and companies operate, and provides great opportunities for improvements that should be used. This follow-up class to “Custom Computational Workflows for BIM Design Implementation” shows how Revit software and Dynamo can benefit from these new developments and cloud services that can provide more global, efficient, fluent, or even fully automated workflows. Current practical examples of custom workflows we use at Zaha Hadid Architects showcase how manual and cross-application design-to-BIM tasks can be implemented via intelligent parametric elements and scripted processes. As a next step, these can be translated into cloud-enabled workflows for further automation and efficiency. What methods, tools, and cloud-services are available and which skills are required to use them?

The technology and tools for computational design in the built environment have never been more powerful or progressive. To complement their specific discipline knowledge, the current and next generation of designers and engineers entering the global workforce are armed with skills ranging from sketching to programming to Building Information Modeling (BIM). As buildings have grown in complexity so too has the power and ubiquity of simulation tools used by different specialist disciplines, with information and processes getting more disconnected up until data is transferred to a common format for delivery. It is time to shift focus away from data toward the spaces between the data. By extrapolating recent innovations in structural engineering processes—such as real-time feedback and gesture-based simulation using Robot Structural Analysis software—we will explore the possibilities of multidisciplinary building simulation using visual programming applications such as Dynamo software to control Revit software and other packages.

This class will investigate how much connection design workflows have changed in recent years. Using several high-profile design projects delivered by Mott MacDonald, we’ll demonstrate how to work with Revit software, Dynamo, Robot Structural Analysis software, Advance Steel software, and IDEA StatiCa to slash designing time, optimize material, and satisfy the code requirements at the same time. We’ll present case studies from Jakarta Velodrome (Indonesia) and Waterloo Station (United Kingdom) with a focus on how to handle data models across the Architecture, Engineering & Construction Collection, and we’ll synchronize them with IDEA StatiCa Connection, a code-checking application from Autodesk industry partner IDEA StatiCa.

With the new Structural Analysis package for Dynamo software, you may optimize your existing structural workflows or invent some way of doing things. The class will show a design process where we use a building model in Revit software for structural analysis. We will optimize the design process using Dynamo programming. We will then use Dynamo to correct the analytical model in Revit and apply loads to the structure. After we've exported the analytical model to a finite element method (FEM) program and analyzed it, we will use Dynamo to write calculation results back to the Revit elements where they can be illustrated.

In an attempt to win my colleagues over to the Robot Structural Analysis software as a company standard, I ran into what seemed like an insurmountable wall: Robot Structural Analysis software doesn't generate 3D ASCE 7 wind loads! This class will walk you through the process I developed to utilize the amazing Dynamo program to grab element geometry, ask a few questions, and create ASCE 7-10 wind load combinations in Robot Structural Analysis software in an attempt to convince my bosses that Robot Structural Analysis software (React Structures platform) and Dynamo are the way of the future. This class will present a new approach to the structural analysis and design workflow. Utilizing Structural Analysis for Revit software and the Dynamo extension in collaboration with third-party software, an automated workflow will be achieved between conceptual model, analysis, and design. The class will show the ability to connect innovative 3D modeling data with traditional calculation methods. By using Revit software as a modeling platform and the Dynamo extension as a data extraction and export tool, this streamlined workflow can revolutionize the current approach to analysis and design. The proposed workflow can be standardized to each user’s preference and used repeatedly across multiple projects. Specific project needs can be included seamlessly into the workflow. The class will explore this workflow as it has been used for a structural seismic retrofit project located at NASA’s (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) Ames Research Center in Moffett Federal Airfield in California. As a large office, AHMM has a high number of live Revit models being developed at any time. Keeping track of model size, quality, and health across all projects is a key objective of AHMM's Digital Design Group. Come and learn how they have been able to fully automate their in-depth model review process through connecting the Revit and Dynamo APIs. As BIM manager at AHMM, Aaron Perry leads a digital strategy, standards development and training to ensure architects approach model development efficiently. In his role as Computational Design Specialist Oliver focuses on developing process automation tools for Revit, streamlining workflows and undertaking proactive research into leading-edge technologies. The combination of Revit software and Navisworks software is by far the best Building Information Modeling (BIM) tool for model authoring and clash coordination. The workflow of using these software systems is pretty straightforward. Once the clash results are out, we can use the Switchback tool from Navisworks Manage to locate those clashes back to Revit. However, having to simultaneously highlight the exact location of those clashes in the Revit file would be challenging. In this class, we will show how we can use a Dynamo script to locate those clashes in Revit by using a sphere family that can be scheduled and highlighted in the model for quick viewing. And finally, we'll add comments in the sphere family schedule to communicate these updates back to the rest of the team.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) for Linear Structures started to emerge in different markets. Through the last five years, this field has witnessed huge improvements either by individual personnel or by large engineering firms. Our firm – accordingly – has made a considerable accomplishment through developing coherent in-house workflow tools.
