Why model as-built conditions when you can work directly with a high-resolution point cloud? In this very hands-on class we will stake out the foundations for a new addition to our Autodesk University (AU) classroom using a remarkably easy, cloud-enabled workflow. First, participants will import a point cloud of our AU classroom into Navisworks Manage software. We will then use Point Layout software to place points on a number of modeled objects that we intend to stake out as part of a small classroom renovation. The model will be shared with the field using BIM 360 Glue cloud service. Finally, we will connect the BIM 360 Layout iPad application to a robotic total station to enable field users to stake out and verify the exact position of the points. All of this will happen using a contextual model of our surroundings.

As Building Information Modeling (BIM) uptake continues to grow across all disciplines, MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) design and MEP spatial coordination is at a particularly interesting stage. The need for both design information inputs and the sharing of design updates from architects, structural engineers, and various specialist MEP designers places pressure on, and increases risk for, MEP coordination teams. While many collaboration tools have been used for file sharing, the advent of Collaboration for Revit cloud service has provided a platform for a new level of buy-in and adoption. The range of benefits that Collaboration for Revit provides-including the ability to house central files-is seeing an increased level of engagement and improved output on time in the industry. We'll demonstrate, through our established workflow and numerous worldwide projects, just how to manage MEP BIM projects using tools such as Revit MEP software and Navisworks software, and we'll show participants the benefits of Collaboration for Revit for effective MEP coordination management.

In this session we will be taking an in-depth look at the collaborative workflows of one of the most innovative projects in the North America. We will focus on the strategy behind a sports and entertainment complex that HNTB and Mortenson have used with Revizto to ensure organized coordination for their extremely aggressive design and construction schedule. Joel Jacobson of Mortenson and Allyn Polancic of HNTB will walk through their ideal workflow of how Revizto streamlined coordination and allowed them to get more out of their existing technology investments.

By its very nature, construction is an ever-changing dynamic environment; schedules, lead times, contracts, personnel changes, logistics, weather-all of these variables and more are in constant flux during a construction project. This lecture will cover the lessons learned from applying Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology to the Intermodal Terminal Facility Construction Project at the Orlando International Airport, which is a part of a $3.1 billion expansion. We'll review how BIM was used to cut costs and increase productivity in the field, as well as where BIM fell short of expectations and what was learned from those experiences. We'll cover the skill sets, techniques, and, most importantly, the attitudes and mindsets that are needed to "ride the giant" so that BIM will be referred to as the "Bible" and "The Money Maker" by the contractors and peers on the job site. Regardless of an organization's size, implementing technologies such as Revit software, Navisworks software, and all of the other BIM (Building Information Modeling)-supporting products and tools requires more than just taking a class and investing in the software. It requires commitment, patience, a knowledgeable resource for ongoing assistance, buy-in and proactive support from upper management—and most importantly, a plan. This session will describe proven techniques for developing and executing a BIM implementation, and will provide case studies of implementations that the presenter has facilitated, for both members of the design community and facility owners and operators.

This class is a combination of a case study and the technical workflow that can be repeated on projects of all types. We will provide an in-depth review of how we are pushing the envelope of 3D laser scanning on a large commercial project in San Francisco with one of the city's most prominent builders. On this project, we took what started as a contractual obligation for the contractor to provide 3D laser-scan data to the owner for as-built documentation of post-tension cables, and turned it into a risk mitigation and tremendous value-adding effort for the contractor. Our team has perfected an overnight workflow previously viewed as "impossible" by many in the industry, letting us laser scan each deck the day before the concrete pour, process/register the scans, compare them to the intelligent models, and provide clear and actionable drawings to the field team, showing them where embeds, blockouts, and MEPs are out of tolerance, all in less than 24 hours and before concrete placement.

Parsons Corporation—a technology-focused defense, intelligence, and infrastructure engineering firm—has implemented BIM 360 technology on its infrastructure projects for the past five years. The enhanced Revit collaborative tools and file restrictions are great, but as many have discovered, it’s not easy or straightforward to set up a BIM 360 project. We will show you how Parsons has implemented BIM 360 with Revit and Civil 3D integration, explain how georeferenced coordinates work, discuss the challenges we encountered because of our client base, and share work-arounds to get BIM 360 implemented in our diverse project portfolio. Our projects are anything but typical, and nor were the challenges we encountered when implementing BIM 360. What we learned while setting up and testing BIM 360 at Parsons will help you efficiently implement it at your office.

The BIM 360 cloud collaboration services are enabling teams to work within an enriched review workflow and allowing them to evaluate and validate their design through clash reporting and spatial coordination exercises which allow teams to find, assign and track issues instantaneously with unprecedented access. We will explore the evolving possibilities provided by these Autodesk services to enhance a workflow traditionally done through 2D digital files or hardcopies of progress sets in a detached workflow. Focused on the interoperability between BIM360, Revit, Civil3D and Navisworks, we will demonstrate their applications and best practices, discovered through large project use, which enables the team to become 100% digital using the web interface or mobile applications. We will highlight solutions for transitioning a team into BIM 360 to conduct reviews, and discuss some of the common challenges encountered during this migration.

One of the core features of delivering a BIM (Building Information Modeling) project is design coordination and clash detection. You need to check clashes between different discipline models to ensure reduced site-errors issues. This lab will focus on creating clash templates that can be reused on various BIM projects to save time and money. In this lab, you’ll create search sets for items such as structural members, mechanical ductwork, plumbing, floors, ceilings, and so on. These will be created by searching Revit element categories that are common to most Revit models. You’ll then perform clash tests based on these search sets. These clash tests will then be exported as a clash template and then imported into other files. This will let you save time when setting up these standard clashes in other files and projects.

How good is the new aspect of BIM 360 software: Design Collaboration? What if you have more than 10 teams on it? How do you start the BIM aspect of a 75,000-square-meter project? As a leading BIM construction company, VINCI Construction France is always looking to improve project management processes. In this class, we’ll present how the Autodesk cloud-based software is applied on a real project: the iconic HEKLA tower, designed by Ateliers Jean Nouvel. We’ll introduce the 1.5-year working progress on BIM 360 Design Collaboration (six months after the official launch). We’ll go deeper to understand how we manage a big project that reaches software performance limits. We’ll also show homemade tools that we used on the project: Forge app linked to Microsoft Power BI, Revit model checker rules to improve the BIM quality of the project. To go further, we’ll show some field implementations that are linked to our BIM 360 platform.

This class explains in detail how this process is performed and maintained throughout the construction process. We will be showcasing the latest project in Sydney, where BIM 360 Docs is being used to provide the latest construction documents to the field executives.

The cost of a project is directly related to the schedule. How many work hours are required for each step? How will design changes and delays impact the cost? Meanwhile, there is continued pressure to consolidate schedules from owners and general contractors. This workshop will explore how estimating and scheduling can be further integrated within your project team to ensure costs are accurate, while capitalizing on the latest 5D BIM, project controls, risk analysis, and CPM methods. Additionally, we will present a case study for logistics tracking using equipment sets on various platforms assisted by Dynamo. We will show design changes in the comparison modes. And we will discuss automated location-based takeoffs and customized reporting templates. Prefabrication and modular construction have become increasingly significant in building design and construction management. BIM (Building Information Modeling) combined with fabrication has enabled integrated architecture and engineering workflows that can embrace these technologies. In industrialized production, the digital model becomes the product. For architecture and engineering professionals, drawing sets rely on symbology and design intent, not on specifics of construction and fabrication. This class will present best practices and procedures for modular off-site fabrication. Focused workflows will be demonstrated using the architectural design and documentation capacity of Autodesk software. The digitally fabricated model produced by Inventor software directly informs both the architectural design and the computer numerical control (CNC) components.

Clash detection is integral during the design process to ensure coordinated and ready-for-construction models are produced. A properly implemented clash detection practice will result in a reduced number of RFIs during construction, and ultimately decreases the costs associated with uncoordinated design models. An offline clash detection process becomes increasingly challenging in a design-build megaproject where dozens of models are developed at a fast pace. Therefore, there is a need for a cloud-based, collaborative, and centralized clash detection platform where the designed models are actively integrated and monitored collectively for outstanding coordination issues. BIM 360 Design software’s platform lets users conduct such a clash detection practice as it hosts live design models, and it provides a built-in clash detection module (that is to say Model Coordination). Learn how Model Coordination was used to clash and report on the LAX Automated People Mover Project.

At Autodesk University 2018, we unveiled our innovative approach to deploying high-definition 3D laser scanning on cast-in-place concrete projects in San Francisco the day prior to concrete placement, analyzing the 3D point cloud against the BIM, and delivering a highly detailed report of deviations the following morning that the construction team could use to rectify any out-of-tolerance elements prior to concrete placement. The result was the highest quality ever achieved on CIP projects. The logical next step was to look inward at our process, software, and hardware for efficiency and quality gains, then look outward for other solutions. We deployed, tested, and analyzed the data from the following reality capture solutions in our quest to see if there truly is one tool that rules them all. We’ll compare the results from each unit and suggest the appropriate application for each. It’ll be a showdown between Leica RTC360 (LiDAR), Leica BLK360 (LiDAR), UAV (LiDAR), Matterport Pro2 (photogrammetry), and UAV (photogrammetry)

Saipem is a large, international turnkey contractor in the Oil & Gas Industry. Construction department always faced problems regarding the real status of projects (in home office) and the constructability (on site), the integration between the 3D model and the data available was often outdated and completely disordered. The game is changing now: the use of Forge Platform allows Saipem to aggregate BIG Data from different sources (SmartPlant 3D, Tekla, Oracle, Navisworks and others) to analyze them (Power BI) and to get an updated dataset of information applying a full BIM approach. During the class the audience will be shown, benefits of the implemented solution compared with previously used ones, with a focus on feasibility, work front analysis, progress measurement, accounting and mechanical completion handling.

BIM (Building Information Modeling) integration in MEP designs streamlines project delivery by introducing a sophisticated plan early in the process. BIM is redefining MEP integration by resulting in material cost savings and decreased production time that translates into further cost savings. MEP integration on a BIM platform streamlines material procurement, which ensures that material estimation is reliable and that production cost is saved by avoiding over-ordering. In this class, we will explain how MEP contractors can use BIM in MEP integration to get a bird's eye view of different segments, right from the ceiling elevations, to the plumbing layout, and through other MEP systems. We will focus on exploring how BIM is redefining integrated MEP design and ensuring reduced production costs. Also, we will discuss how integrating different analysis software with the intelligent model is revolutionizing MEP integration.

A good project manager knows that a project succeeds if the budget, schedule, and scope are managed effectively. A great project manager knows how to use BIM (Building Information Modeling) data to better manage those metrics in real time. This course will explore BIM tools and techniques a project manager can use to execute a project successfully. From 4D/5D schedule and cost integration using Assemble to the development of a project dashboard using Microsoft Power BI and BIM 360 software as a hosting platform, this course will look into the wide array of options at a project manager’s disposal when using BIM data to benefit a project.

We will present a case study on a Building Information Modeling (BIM) project utilizing Revit software, BIM 360 Team and Fusion Team (formerly A360 Team), and Collaboration for Revit cloud service for work sharing between Arcadis and multiple subconsultants. This project started in January 2016 and was managed by Arcadis as the lead engineering firm for the project, working with Autodesk as a consulting service. Autodesk provided mentoring services to assist with the adoption of Collaboration for Revit. In the class, we'll share project success criteria, and setup in Collaboration for Revit and BIM 360 Team and Fusion Team. We'll also share our best practices and workflow, troubleshooting, and lessons learned.
