Working with robots has always been a challenge. When combined with advanced manufacturing technologies such as 3D printing, robots can enable powerful new workflows for industry. This presentation will present an overview of how robots can be used for manufacturing applications and how Autodesk software controls and drives these applications. Our industry partner moi composites srl developed a continuous composite 3D printing process and is able to print glass fiber with a robot arm. Autodesk helped them to create a unique software workflow and helped them to control the process in every printing step. This class will cover: 1) robot best practices; 2) additive manufacturing in combination with robots; 3) combining traditional manufacturing techniques like composite lamination with additive manufacturing; 4) industrial case study for continuous fiber printing.

Part One is a roundtable discussion about the theories and tactics of Generative Design. Attendees will be presented with a problem to optimize an existing component in a larger system. The problem definition will be examined while also considering how to extrapolate the performance of the existing part without having prior FEA data. Part Two is a hands-on lab where attendees will take their written plan and build the Generative studies to solve the problem. This lab will allow attendees to fully explore the Fusion 360 interface and to develop all needed geometry, boundary conditions, and study parameters. Part Three is also a lab where the generated results will be compared in the “Explore” environment and then successful solution candidates downloaded from the cloud. Results will then be modified using modeling tools and validated with Fusion 360’s FEA solver. Finally, results will be run through the CAM tools inside Fusion 360 to generate valid toolpaths for end-product machining. Part Four is a workshop that will take place in the Factory on the One Autodesk Expo floor and provide boot camp attendees with a first-hand look at the processes that go into manufacturing parts created with generative design. Attendees will get up close to 5-axis CNC machinery and the various workholding, tooling, and operational considerations involved.

Acciona and Autodesk have been working together for more than a year to create the first concrete, large-scale, 3D-printed building element, which has been generated using Autodesk Generative Design by their Advanced Consulting Team. The manufacturing of the element was done by the Spanish company Acciona (one of the most advanced companies in concrete, large-scale, 3D-printing technology) in their 3D-printing facilities in Spain. 3D-printing technology used by Acciona is what it is called concrete, free-shape, large-scale 3D printing, which lets users create a physical element from a free-shape 3D model. Acciona was the first company to 3D print a bridge in 2016, to 3D print heritage elements in 2017, and (now, in 2018) to develop a 3D-printing method that enables the manufacture of large-scale, concrete, complex shapes defined by Autodesk Generative Design software. Acciona combined additive and subtractive manufacturing in order to obtain highly detailed, 3D-printed elements.

In this class we will follow new design workflows made possible by the introduction of Inventor’s shape generator, mesh tools and modern 3D printing technologies. The class will start by looking at the physical properties of current 3D printed plastics and metals. Then, with the material specifications, required for proper design simulation, we will configure the shape generator to automatically create an optimized shape based on sample design requirements. Using the resulting mesh, the class will examine the ins and outs of two separate workflow paths; using the generated mesh directly for manufacture & placement in an assembly, or modifying the part using Inventor’s mesh and surface tools to tweak the design. Autodesk Advanced Consulting and General Motors are working in collaboration on the future of design to create important new vehicles. The application of generative design is a key part of this engagement, and in this class, we will explore the application of this technology. We will look at the evolution of the design from conception to manufacturing and some of the wider considerations in the design approach. An overview of the broader generative-design application will be shared, as well as a deep dive into a generative-designed component. We will cover the streamlined workflow utilizing Fusion 360 software, generative design, and Netfabb software to achieve design for additive manufacturing. The methodologies and design approaches will be presented by representatives from Advanced Consulting and General Motors. There will also be some GM-manufactured artifacts to see. Our aim is that attendees leave with a familiarity with the generative-design process and how industry is applying this to real problems.

Markus Fricke (BMW) will explain a joint research project between BMW and Autodesk with focus on using Generative Design technologies and additive manufacturing methods for creating a new kind of vehicle that can be lighter, faster, cheaper, more individualized, reliable, easier to produce, or simply wonderful. It will be an overview of infinite possibilities with a more business-related view.

Industrial robots are primarily known from the automotive industry's production lines. The goal of this class is to present robots instead as multifunctional and flexible interfaces between the digital and the physical world that can be used for anything from innovative, large-scale fabrication to immersive virtual reality (VR) simulators. This extension beyond the robots' initial scope is enabled by new software developments that facilitate a seamless workflow from design to machine through Dynamo software and KUKA|prc. Utilizing parametric design tools lets us use robots for mass customization and small lot sizes, rather than mass fabrication. The class will provide an overview on how to utilize industrial robots through Dynamo and Fusion 360 software, and present realized projects by both small to medium-size enterprises as well as international corporations. We'll also look into the future toward new developments that build upon the geometric capabilities of the Forge cloud and couple it with serverless computation and integration with IoT platforms.
