Structural Optimization That Architects Don't Hate
Modern structural optimization based on reducing materials has facilitated improvements for some structures like canopies and bridges. However, when applied to buildings, these approaches to optimization are less appropriate, as they can impact internal building layouts, frustrating our architectural colleagues. Procedural generation—a method for using algorithms to generate geometry—when combined with more familiar structural optimization like Generative Design in Refinery, offers us a new methodology that can drastically reduce the complexity of the problem. It achieves this by mimicking human processes and applying them to the option generation process, such as aligning the building's structural frame with key features in the building layout, like cores and atria. This technique also offers the opportunity to include multidisciplinary constraints by adjusting the building structural frame to match the position of internal features, such as internal walls and corridors.

Introduction to the BIM 360 Glue API
In this class, we introduce you to the BIM 360 Glue API. The Glue API is composed of 2 parts: a web services API and a display component (viewer). The web services API is REST-based. It allows you to access BIM 360 project data in the cloud, such as users, models, and actions. The display component (or viewer API) can be embedded in your application. It provides additional control to its user interface and allows you to customize the viewing experience. Using the Glue API, you can, for example, automate updating projects and models from external applications. BIM 360 Glue keeps track of user's actions as data in addition to traditional model-centric information, which can be used for progress tracking, health monitoring of projects, and so on. As BIM 360 Glue is totally cloud-based, you can connect your own web services applications with the Glue projects. We also show you examples of use cases and demonstrate what you can do using the Glue API. This class assumes you have a basic understanding of web programming, such as web services. Working knowledge of the REST API is helpful for understanding the discussion.

Vault and Inventor Properties: Working Together for Better Data Management
Managing the metadata associated with your designs can be a confusing task. If you are using Vault software, the first step in the process is realizing that Vault Properties and Inventor software’s iProperties are actually different. Also, you have to understand the difference between a Vault system property and a Vault user-defined property. Once you understand all the different types of properties involved, how do you get them to work together? This class will guide you through the journey, from understanding the difference between iProperties versus Vault properties and Vault system properties and Vault user-defined properties. Then we will demonstrate how to create the proper mappings that will enable them to work seamlessly together. We will discuss different ways to use this data, from searching Vault for these properties to how to use those properties on drawing title blocks and parts lists.

Automated Resource Leveling and Scheduling at LAIKA
To manage the ever-increasing complexity and collaboration in the creation of physical assets for LAIKA's hybrid stop-motion/CG features, a Shotgun-based integrated browser workflow was developed that enables automated resource leveling and scheduling in a centralized system accessible to the entire studio. Highlights include a new custom charting application that integrates with the existing Shotgun infrastructure, as well as the use of Consilium Technology (recently acquired by Autodesk), a new, machine-learning-based, automated resource-leveling system that effectively balances and assigns resources. Together, they turn a time-consuming and error-prone manual leveling process into a fast and automated procedure that generates an accurate, adjustable, easy-to-communicate schedule.

Design Focused for Additive Manufacturing
Additive manufacturing (AM), better known as 3D printing, is disrupting the manufacturing industry. Its capabilities and build processes make additive technologies ideal for applications such as light-weighting and component consolidation. In order to fully capitalize on the awesome power of AM, an understanding of the technology and its limitations is crucial. However, this is not a natural skill for most designers and engineers. Since AM is so new and different from traditional manufacturing, it comes with a completely different set of design considerations. When properly understood and applied, design for additive manufacturing (DfAM) can vastly improve printing times and it results in higher-quality parts. Using iLogic with Design Automation for Inventor to Create a Configurator
Design Automation for Inventor software generally enables the desktop APIs to be used in the cloud—similar to how they would work on the desktop, but without the need of any installed software or dependent licenses. An additional, easily overlooked advantage of Design Automation for Inventor is its capability to run iLogic scripts in the cloud. These scripts being embedded in the CAD file itself can be programmed to auto execute under certain conditions. This class will address taking advantage of this capability to combine the Forge Design Automation API with iLogic to create a configurator by modifying an input Inventor file (IPT) in the cloud, according to the inputs provided by the user on an easy-to-use user interface. The results can be viewed immediately on a web browser using the Forge Viewer API, and are available for download in multiple formats such as IPT, IDW, and PDF. This web application sample uses the latest web technologies and is OS independent and mobile-device friendly.
