Construction Scale 3D Printing – Past Present and Future Prospects
Since over two decades ago, when the speaker started the field of large scale 3D printing, no other activity in the field was initiated for over a decade. More recently the number of related developments have been exponentially increasingly. Technologies using various materials and various robotics approaches have been recently under development targeting a multitude of applications including building construction. A historical perspective, a review of current activities and discussion of future prospects focusing on construction for terrestrial and planetary applications of large scale 3D printing will be presented. Potential areas of interface with some current technologies such as CAD, BIM, IoT, etc. will also be discussed.

Top down, bottom up, skeletal modeling, multi-body master part—if you are having difficulty turning your part models into assembly models do not despair! There are many alternative assembly techniques that can help you to produce great results. This class is for drafters who have made their way through a basic Autodesk Inventor software training course, but who are having difficulty using Inventor in production, particularly on bespoke, one-off projects. This class focuses on "alternative" assembly modeling techniques in Inventor that can help you build unique, fully parametric models quickly and simply without the nightmare of assembly constraints and circular adaptive references. In this hands-on, session we'll go step by step through the specific nodes available in Dynamo to drive a steel structure in Advance Steel. It's about the basics of creating beams and plates. We'll then work with specific nodes to set up the beam type and size, material, and user attributes. We'll assign some connections in Advance Steel to understand how modifications to the Dynamo script affect the model. Furthermore, we'll walk through the benefits of using Microsoft Excel Sheets to drive a Dynamo script for similar projects like transmission towers.

Reimagining Construction: 3D Printing of Large-Scale Structures
3D printing has the potential to revolutionize the way we make almost everything; yet materials currently being used are neither environmentally sustainable nor optimized for the 3D-printing process. Applied to large-scale structures, 3D printing is becoming a topic of growing interest in large part because of the urgent need to increase both productivity and safety on construction sites. Part of the appeal of the 3D printing of large-scale structures is that it offers the opportunity to robotically automate construction in extreme or hostile environments. The race to print buildings in three dimensions is intensifying globally. However, while the extrusive material of choice for most investigative researchers is currently concrete, the concrete industry is one of the largest contributors to human-produced CO2 emissions worldwide. This roundtable will discuss the environmental and technical opportunities and concerns related to concrete 3D printing, and alternative approaches.

Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) and Modular Prefabrication: Methods for Workforce Training
Design, fabrication, and manufacturing for construction is advancing in the piping industry at a rapid pace. As such, workforce training for using the latest available technologies with the latest advances in design is essential. In this class, we’ll explore design for manufacture and assembly (DfMA) workflows and methods and the application to United Association training for improving the DfMA and modular assembly fabrication and installation skills of installers of mechanical piping and plumbing systems. We’ll be exploring generative design, modular assembly techniques, and automated tools, including their integration with Revit software, BIM 360 software, Navisworks software, and STRATUS, to develop modular fabrication training processes and methods.

Accelerated Clash Coordination and MEP Modeling with Dynamo Player

Clash coordination can be quite exhausting while implementing a BIM (Building Information Modeling) workflow in an established CAD environment where the BIM application only appears prior to construction and none of its benefits are used in the project development. In this class, we’ll learn about coordination methods that can improve the understanding of scopes, workflows, and clash coordination while the project is developing, and how BIM benefits would make a greater impact on the project. We’ll integrate Navisworks Clash Detection methods with Dynamo for clash coordination in early phases by a hierarchical breakdown, and use again the Dynamo Player to remodel or accelerate the clash coordination. Finally, we’ll use Dynamo Player to review engineering functionality for pipes, ducts, and conduit elements so that information is accurate using some custom-made scripts. We’ll review some samples used in some projects, and discover how to extract CAD lines to create Revit MEP elements.

BIM Data . . . Owner Data . . . Are We Making Data Complicated for the Owner?
We hear and see the word "data" all the time. But what does it really mean? Does it even mean anything? Who needs data? Why do you need to collect data? Why is data important, really—it's not BIM . . . is it? Here are 4 questions that facilities managers should ask themselves: How often do you get handed the actual FM data needed for your PM program? How many hours did it take your team to populate the FM data from your last building project? Where is the data you received from your last BIM project? Where are your current operations and maintenance manuals kept and maintained? Now, think how you would deliver this data. Are you delivering this data? Do you want to deliver this data? We will explore all these options in this lecture. We will also discuss whether you need BIM to have data.

Structural Precast for Revit-Fast and Accurate Modeling in a Single BIM Model
Autodesk brings into play a new automated workflow for precast elements, turning slabs and walls into assemblies via automatic segmentation. Automatic reinforcement, shop drawings, and CAM files then step in to complete the design process. Respecting designers' and fabricators' perspectives and switching between different levels of development are some more key benefits of embracing a Revit-software-based workflow. But no model is truly complete until multidisciplinary coordination between structure, MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing), and architecture is achieved, which is greatly enabled in this all-Revit-software-based solution. The purpose of this class is to demonstrate a Building Information Modeling (BIM)-connected design-to-fabrication workflow from Revit for a precast model, and we'll also explore some other great productivity and modeling tools dedicated to precast that are delivered by Autodesk partners.

Rebar Modeling in Revit: Keep It in Check
In this hands-on lab, you will learn how to model and adjust reinforcement using all the tools available in Revit software. We’ll use practical examples, ranging from typical building structures to complex structural elements. We’ll learn how rebar constraints work and how to use their power to make precise adjustments to bars, yielding clash-free rebar models. We’ll learn the differences between shape-driven and free-form rebar, and which tools and modeling techniques are practical for different types of concrete elements. We’ll use the scheduling tools in Revit to extract rebar fabrication data, and learn best practices for getting that data for both shape-driven and free-form rebar.

One of the most requested areas in Advance Steel detailing software is the ability to customize your templates to generate detail drawings. At the same time, it is one of the most complex parts of this product. In this hand-on lab, you'll learn how to customize a drawing style by creating a completely new drawing style, going step by step through all phases, from simple to more complex configuration. We'll walk through the workflow of configuring drawing styles using the Drawing Style Manager interface, with explanation of existing options and settings. We'll configure and use model objects, labels, and dimensions in specific scenarios. At the end of the class, you will know how to define your requests and how to customize your drawing styles to suit the company standards.

Advance Steel Powered by the Magic of Dynamo
Dynamo software may be the name of a famous magician, but there's a magician of a different kind with the same name called the Dynamo Extension for Advance Steel. In this hands-on lab, you will learn how to make a basic portal frame structure by modeling first in Dynamo a standalone programming environment where you the designer will create it programmatically and then preview it in real time in Advance Steel software. During this lab, we'll introduce you to the basic commands and functionality of the Dynamo Extension, including schemes to create sections, assign materials, and so on. We'll demonstrate how the model is linked and updated directly into Advance Steel by the extension. Learn from a real-world live demonstration how the implementation and creation of automated customizations to generate models from Dynamo to Advance Steel will drive efficiency, resulting in productivity gains for your business.

Using LOD for Coordination
In this presentation, we'll highlight how using level of development (LOD) status by element helps model authors know how complete their models are. We'll also demonstrate how, at different coordination events in a project, all parties can use LOD to indicate to each other their completion of design in the project by using the LOD score as a trigger for other dependent trades to move forward with their design efforts. For example, a structural engineer can use LOD element status in his or her own structural model to know what parts of the model are still subject to change. When the structural engineer is finished with exterior columns and many of the internal columns, those confirmed elements have a LOD status of 350. However, the steel around the internal elevator shaft area will be at a LOD status of 300 because the elevator equipment hasn't been selected yet. By visualizing the LOD status at a glance, the structural engineers know where the model still needs attention.
