In this class, students will learn the basics of machine learning and how they can apply it to building design and construction. First, we'll talk about the history of machine learning and how it has been used in literature and the building industry. Then, we'll talk about some easy-to-use machine learning algorithms and try to implement them in Dynamo Studio software. This class does not require any prerequisite knowledge or skills.

What are the possibilities when we talk about IoT (Internet of Things) and BIM (Building Information Modeling)? Well, when we integrate through Forge intelligent models and Microsoft Azure IoT Hub, we can have a world of possibilities and insight with machine learning. In this lecture, you will see how data collected with BIM 360 software to make an inventory were connected with equipment in the building to monitor what was going on and make predictive analysis, in order to cut building maintenance costs. You’ll see how BIM 360 Ops software can be used to open and close maintenance tickets.

Machine Learning (ML) techniques are now widely being used in almost all industries. This course focuses on how you can use ML in  the design of Mechanical Systems. We will share our insights on developing a methodology for quickly building a ML design app for the most common control valve type (the Symmetric Butterfly Valve), and how you can use numerical or experimental data generated from simulationHub to train your models. This class will step through machine learning fundamentals, data analysis, training and validating a ML model; and how to generate new 3D designs based on ML using Autodesk Forge.

This roundtable discussion will get you up to speed on what machine learning is, what research is currently in development for Fusion 360 software, and how it impacts you. As Autodesk becomes a data company, machine learning can add value to your product development process in a variety of ways. We’ll start the discussion by giving practical examples of the types of problems that machine learning can help solve for product design and manufacturing. We’ll then guide participants through several exercises to identify opportunities, contribute your priorities, comment on the current plans, and learn how to get involved in the future. This is also a great forum to share any concerns about this technology to an audience that can take your feedback into the development plans and have an open discussion about what Autodesk should be doing to address them.

With the advent of machine learning and advances of technology adoption in the construction industry, the bar is moving higher for general contractors; as a general contractor, you must make sure you stay abreast of recent advances and are well positioned to capitalize on data for managing risk. In this class, using a case study, we will go over the following: how the next-generation BIM 360 platform is designed to create a single source of truth for the lifecycle of projects and a storage for all data in one place where a general contractor can use different solutions in a connected manner; and how Autodesk is going to take it a step further and by Project IQ, make the platform the source of intelligence through the project.Regional quality director from Swinerton, Project manager from Layton, and Technical Deployment Specialist from Bam will then talk from their perspectives about their experience on adoption of BIM 360 to capitalize on data to manage risk and make decisions, and how they feel the platform is transforming their day-to-day job and productivity.

This class dives into our cross-divisional project at Autodesk for the making of a SmartBridge inside our Pier9 facility.We'll walk through our case study where we used structural analysis, Eagle, Revit and Forge to design and plan the layout of sensors onto an interior pedestrian footbridge. Using sensors for strain, acceleration, temperature, pressure, humidity, sound and cameras, we created the "nervous system". We then integrated all this live sensor data into Autodesk's cloud environment, and used Forge to bring all the data into one context on top of the BIM.Using data at the centre, we'll show you how we learned from the data to create various machine learning analytics for interacting with people on the bridge. In our class, we'll go over how we applied big data analysis techniques, machine learning, computer vision and visualization in the cloud to make our bridge "smart".(Joint AU/Forge DevCon class).

This class will examine designing environments for visually capable Machine Learning Agents to train in. Looking at both modular, procedurally generated environments and non-generative spaces, the class will cover constructing environments to promote generalization and learning. Additionally, the class will give an overview of the design constraints imposed when training AI, including vision sizing, computing power, and graphic fidelity. The class will dissect the Unity Obstacle Tower Challenge environments, including their construction in Autodesk Maya, the modular structure, and procedural generation. The class will also survey the possible issues in adapting an existing digital environment to use with AI.

Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) tools have found a niche in real estate sales and marketing, and they are having some impact on design decision making, but the real impact on construction lies just over the horizon when gaming technology, wearable computing, and machine learning will deliver a rapid proliferation of multiplayer collaboration environments for process planning to optimize design, sequencing, coordination, and safety planning. This session focuses on building customized rendering workflows in the Dynamo 3D Background Viewport, allowing very efficient display of geometries. Furthermore, by tracking the mouse position in the 3D viewport, interesting ways for users to directly manipulating the 3D objects can also be done! This will open up many possibilities for integrating exciting computational design algorithms into Dynamo, especially those that relies on iterative algorithms commonly found in computational geometry, optimization, simulation, machine learning, etc... An example of what can be achieved with this kind of approach is DynaShape, which features real-time interactive physical and geometric constraint solver.

"One of the biggest hurdles in using an STL mesh model for a downward manufacturing application is the lack of geometry feature information in the STL file. This class will demonstrate how machine learning techniques can be applied to extract geometrical information from mesh models; and explain the process of building machine learning models, feature engineering for mesh data, and parameter tuning. We will also cover Autodesk Forge integration for data translation and viewing; and demonstrate how to use AWS cloud infrastructure such as GPU computing for big data and AWS Lambda for fast online predictions."

The Fusion 360 Drawings Team has started its journey to achieve a more efficient drawing creation workflow so that a designer can focus better on the real design work. Starting from the very versatile but easy-to-use Center Mark Pattern feature, this class will show how these new functionalities and algorithms can help greatly reduce both the workload and the learning time of the drawing process. And we'll discuss the future of faster dimensioning, smarter (automatic or semi-automatic) view and annotation creation, and user style machine learning.

The ability to manage risk on construction projects is using key data on practical timeframes. During this session, Justin Levine (head of risk strategy at BuildingConnected) and Pat Keaney (director of BIM 360 Enterprise Products) will share strategies for getting ahead of risk with a recurring and data-driven subcontractor qualification process, artificial intelligence, and machine learning.

There is a well-established precedent for predictive analytics in business. In 2009, Google built a predictive model using years of data to determine which employees were most likely to quit. Suffolk and Autodesk partner Smartvid.io partnered to explore if predictive analytics could be applied to safety in construction. In this class, Jit Kee Chin, Suffolk’s EVP and chief data officer, and Josh Kanner, founder and CEO of Smartvid.io, will discuss how 10 years of BIM 360 Field software and other data sources were combined to create a safety predictive model. We’ll show examples of the data, discuss machine-learning frameworks for computer vision as well as predictive analytics, and we’ll present the results of the modeling exercise, how it can be displayed to the user, and what may come next. Attendees will participate in a discussion on what this new ability to see into the future could mean for the operations, human resources, and legal structures of construction?

Sources of video and photo content are rapidly increasing within construction. In addition to mobile phones and tablets, drones and even wearables are starting to generate their own views of “reality” from the job site. How can this information best be capitalized on for value during construction, and managed afterward for future retrieval? In this case study-driven class, Oliver Smith of Skanska and Josh Kanner of Smartvid.io will explore how a new set of technologies are helping to deal with the content proliferation—and are also going beyond to elevate the power and value of this visual data. New techniques in machine learning are enabling mining of the native content to help tag and search the ever-growing set of videos and photos coming from the field. Once tagged, the content can be integrated with Building Information Modeling (BIM) for ongoing progress updates during the project and other workflows.
