This lab will provide an explanation and demo of iterative daylighting analysis, and how to improve the performance of your building through understanding the analysis of solar insolation exposure. We will display an application of these methods and how they can be used during schematic and design phases by comparing multiple design iterations and providing an understanding of how to compare and convey these forms of analysis—a piece of the iterative building performance analysis process. You will walk away with your own before-and-after visual graphics of an improved design alteration, as well as an understanding of the impact of this topic on design decisions.

The collection and management of building data, including the requirements for rooms, equipment, and other needs, as it evolves from early design through construction documentation and as a basis for facility management, can be enhanced through advanced techniques in Revit-based software. This includes linking to an external data source, automating the creation of areas and rooms, creating room data sheets, and other graphic and non-graphic processes that complement BIM. This class covers basic database theory, the structure of objects and their relation to data management, and Revit techniques for implementing this general theory in actual projects. We also discuss third-party software and customizations, and how they are used to further advance these processes. The class goes beyond learning Revit commands and looks at the underlying information requirements of emerging integration in project delivery.

Project management for construction can be very challenging. It involves intensive coordination among teams and stakeholders throughout all project phases, from design review to project delivery. Efficient management of construction documents, such as drawings, designs, issues, RFIs, change orders, etc., is the key for project success. Research has shown that more than 50% of RFIs have a root cause in design issues and documentation error that could be solved by improving design review. In this session, we look at how a data driven approach can help project teams including VDC managers, project engineers, superintendents and project managers stay on top of critical high risk items and take action. We explore how technologies such as Construction IQ can leverage knowledge and past experience gained through mining tons of data and apply that to prioritize issues and RFIs, and group them into actionable categories for faster and more focused processing, with the ultimate goal of mitigating project risks and bettering project performance. University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Medical Center has been on a path to designing buildings via integrated project delivery-with much success. But what happens once the model is designed, constructed, and delivered? Please join us in a review of the road that has led to our subject case study: Take a look at the real-time development of the 125,000-square-foot, 7-story Precision Cancer Medicine Building as it has been Revit software designed, Building Information Modeling (BIM) specified, and Maximo integrated in order to take advantage of the lifecycle potentials thus offered. Industry tools like BIM 360 Glue software, BIM 360 Field software, Revit software, Maximo, BIM Assure, Service Now, Easy Max, Archibus, and other software support platforms all lend themselves to innovative lifecycle operations solutions at the hands of our in-house team and external partners so absolutely critical to our success.

As an innovator in improving construction processes, Skanska was an early adopter of BIM 360 Field software. Building on Skanska’s experience, the presenters will review a large project that used BIM 360 Field to augment information flow and quality control, and improve project delivery to the client. BIM 360 Field enabled full sharing of supply chain information across fabrication and jobsite to ensure a successful quality project for the client. This 1,550-spot parking garage was located in a tight urban locale and consisted of 1,486 precast concrete members. Using BIM 360 Field equipment and checklist modules, precast members were traced from fabrication, transportation, and installation. In using BIM 360 Field, the project and subcontractor team reduced the manual effort involved in collecting quality and logistics data. The presenters will also cover lessons learned, including the need for transparency, barcoding challenges, and ongoing user support.

This class will discuss the practical application of technology to improve field operations. We will focus on the use of augmented reality using the DAQRI headset and the Autodesk Augmented Reality application to review design intent with all stakeholders, provide continuous quality control of the as-coordinated versus as-built environments, and provide expedited monthly billing applications to streamline the construction process.

In this course, we’ll identify the information that is essential for operations, as well as look at how to structure the data, and how to prepare for a successful export to BIM 360 Ops software. In BIM 360 Ops, we’ll show you how to set up preventive maintenance for your most critical equipment, and how to ensure that it’s in the hands of your mobile workforce when and where they need it. Throughout the course, the BIM 360 Ops Team will share best practices learned from customers like you that make handover matter.

This presentation will explore how and when to capitalize on technology to engage a range of stakeholders. Our focus will be on how social factors impact technology, and how they are used to engage stakeholders in major projects such as Salt Lake City International Airport. More than 200 stakeholders are engaged through the airport’s project progress using a massive virtual board, 150 Collaboration For Revit models, and advanced augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) visualization tools. With more than 2,000,000 square feet, $3 billion, 12 years of planning, and 5 years of design and construction, this large infrastructure project has defined a culture of collaboration for a design team of hundreds led by HOK.

The course will cover the creation of a Construction Project utilizing as many Autodesk products as possible. We will start with InfraWorks 360 to demonstrate on the site selection, then utilize Map3D, Civil3D and Vehicle Tracking to build the infrastructure of the site. In parallel, we will demonstrate the use of Dynamo, Formit and Revit to build the Buildings and Structure of the site, and Plant3D, with Advance Steel to build the rest of the Plant. Also demonstrated will be Navisworks, BIM360 Glue and BIM360 Field to show a complete workflow of a project from initial concept phase to final project delivery and commissioning.

The architecture, engineering, and construction industry is facing the need to provide the best design and engineering solutions within tight deadlines. Generative design is one of the most powerful approaches to overcoming this challenge by automating and exploring all possible design variations according to a set of design parameters. This class will show that generative design can be used for MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) design engineering. This class will use Revit 2019 software, Dynamo Visual Studio, and Project Fractal for MEP generative design. Specifically, you will discover how to create a ceiling plan via generative design, where the layout of air terminal devices and lighting devices will be automatically generated and explored. Moreover, we’ll explore thousands of design variations and coordinate them across disciplines by using Project Fractal. Hence, better design optimization can be accomplished in early stages, helping to make it easier to follow an integrated project delivery process and enhancing the decision-making process. This class, based on a Government Datacenter project, is about BIM application to inform and demonstrate construction stage planning, integration of modularised engineering, and inputs from assembly and operational specialists. The goal is to achieve improved project delivery and safety with operational efficiencies while improving collaborative working and integration of SMART technology energised through BIM with Revit. The future of Built Environments lies in the uptake of new and emerging technology, and we are behind compatible industries like automotive and aircraft manufacturing. BIM is a key part of the journey; a catalyst for driving new performance standards such as the UK 2025 vision.

The built environment is fundamentally changing, empowered by innovation in virtual design and construction (VDC). The result is more-complex and increasingly elegant designs, as well as streamlined procurement and construction methods. This panel includes academic and industry leaders responsible for developing and implementing new VDC technology, including Hilda Espinal of CannonDesign, Ricardo Khan of Mortenson Construction, Forest Flager of Stanford University, and Danielle Dy Buncio of VIATechnik. The panel will discuss advancements seen on past and current industry projects in the areas of prefabrication, artificial intelligence, data analytics, virtual and augmented reality, and multidisciplinary design optimization. Panelists will use multimedia presentations and demonstrations to communicate the material to attendees to facilitate thoughtful and interactive discussion. Attendees will leave with a greater understanding of the impact that VDC has on project delivery and performance.

BIM/VDC in AEC have been reliant upon Rosetta Stone Softwares that allow trades and designers to view one-another's scope and documentation. It is Gilbane's opinion that one of the largest areas of inefficiency in the shop drawing process is the translation of design information to installation information. While no software is going to make this process effortless, it should be noted that for a designer to work in one software and trade contractors to work in others represents a lack of forward momentum for the sake of one entity's (of many) sunk costs. It is our opinion that it is possible to align all strategic contractors into one software platform allowing for seamless '3D Xrefs', accelerating processes and almost eliminating the need for model translation schemes. Finally, we will demonstrate that since 2015, it has impacted the subcontractor community with Scopes of Work that require this process, and will share what data we have on the schedule and cost benefits to the process.

All of us have been there at one time or another: faced with the daunting mundane task of manually inputting data from a certain program to another. And this not only takes an extremely long time, but it is also prone to error—along with the fact that the information is static and isolated. So, instead of spending more money on a new add-in or software program, this session will demonstrate how to capitalize on Revit software, Dynamo, and Microsoft Excel (software programs already on our computers) to produce accurate HVAC load results for HVAC design. Attendees will learn to utilize design criteria with Revit MEP Spaces, and learn how to push, pull, and manipulate that data using Dynamo and Excel.

The XR revolution is happening in the design industry, but many design firms and individual designers may have not thought about how they can do conceptual design and present design ideas differently. The concept of immersive technology implies a great paradigm shift from a 2D design space to a 3D world where designers can empower their creativity. With an innovative and open-minded work culture, HOK embraces new design technology and aims to create a more effective workflow and powerful design solutions. The class will focus on how XR can help create a more powerful work environment and push the limit of design communication, and discuss the impact of XR on designers, clients, and users.
