The traditional railroad industry is lagging behind the building industry in terms of innovative technology. One reason could be that there's a lack of good Building Information Modeling (BIM) tools. This presentation will take you on a journey through the design process in large railroad projects to show what we're doing and how we're pushing things further with the help of InfraWorks software and Unreal Engine. We will cover collaboration and live feed, involving the information flow and efficient collaboration between hundreds of people per project. We'll also cover concurrent engineering and model utilization to the full extent with virtual reality (VR) enabled by Unreal Engine. This is project delivery reinvented. Leaders must make sense of an evolving network of tools and equip themselves for transformation. This class will provide an overview of the techniques and trends shaping the industry and the value of construction data captured in the field. The class will explore challenges and best practices for contractors and project owners looking to understand labor productivity while it happens, and stay ahead of the technology curve.

This class will discuss the practical application of technology to improve field operations. We will focus on the use of augmented reality using the DAQRI headset and the Autodesk Augmented Reality application to review design intent with all stakeholders, provide continuous quality control of the as-coordinated versus as-built environments, and provide expedited monthly billing applications to streamline the construction process.

To achieve its potential, you should begin operating your new building on day one. General contractors and owners both have roles to play here. In this course, we’ll identify the information that is essential for operations, as well as look at how to structure the data, and how to prepare for a successful export to BIM 360 Ops software. In BIM 360 Ops, we’ll show you how to set up preventive maintenance for your most critical equipment, and how to ensure that it’s in the hands of your mobile workforce when and where they need it. Throughout the course, the BIM 360 Ops Team will share best practices learned from customers like you that make handover matter.

This presentation will explore how and when to capitalize on technology to engage a range of stakeholders. Our focus will be on how social factors impact technology, and how they are used to engage stakeholders in major projects such as Salt Lake City International Airport. More than 200 stakeholders are engaged through the airport’s project progress using a massive virtual board, 150 Collaboration For Revit models, and advanced augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) visualization tools. With more than 2,000,000 square feet, $3 billion, 12 years of planning, and 5 years of design and construction, this large infrastructure project has defined a culture of collaboration for a design team of hundreds led by HOK.

In this session, we will explore the differences between classic BIM 360 Glue and next-generation BIM 360 Glue, and how you can improve your team’s efficiency by making the switch. We’ll also set up coordination models and recognize how the model integrates across the entire BIM 360 platform. We'll ensure that the stickiness in this session will make the move to Model Coordination easier for you and your organization.

The course will cover the creation of a Construction Project utilizing as many Autodesk products as possible. We will start with InfraWorks 360 to demonstrate on the site selection, then utilize Map3D, Civil3D and Vehicle Tracking to build the infrastructure of the site. In parallel, we will demonstrate the use of Dynamo, Formit and Revit to build the Buildings and Structure of the site, and Plant3D, with Advance Steel to build the rest of the Plant. Also demonstrated will be Navisworks, BIM360 Glue and BIM360 Field to show a complete workflow of a project from initial concept phase to final project delivery and commissioning.

This will be a facilitated discussion between industry stakeholders, including contractors, suppliers, and solution-based software providers. We will look at what challenges electrical contractors and designers have faced in trying to make models that are representative of the real world. We will discuss solutions and experiences through design, coordination, prefabrication, and the in-depth utilization of model data. Using the firsthand experience of our experts, we will talk from the perspective of stakeholders throughout the virtual design and construction process.

This session will present how The Ohio State University has successfully developed a Building Information Modeling (BIM) project delivery standard that enables the model to serve as a single source of truth for relevant spatial and asset information throughout the building lifecycle. This delivery standard has truly "begun with the end in mind" by taking advantage of the knowledge gained from the BIM for Existing Buildings portion of the Buckeye BIM Initiative. We'll highlight how the Revit portion of this deliverable will work in collaboration with COBie structured data to facilitate its utilization in effective data turnover. We'll highlight the need to implement technology solutions and workflows to enable the use of the model across the University and to support interoperability with other data systems. Last, we'll cover lessons learned, continuing challenges, and how the standard has evolved over the last 2.5 years of existence.

In a fast-paced design-build environment, the ability to streamline and accelerate processes necessary for optimized project delivery is directly proportional to the ability to minimize information loss. Using real-life examples, we will demonstrate how complex projects and their demanding schedules be improved from the use of Autodesk Building Design Suite. The class will cover a Building Information Modeling (BIM) workflow from the very beginning of the design and construction process. We will discuss how early decisions have a lasting impact on the building’s performance and lifecycle cost, explore the process of program development and client engagement using advanced visualization techniques, and finally, delve into the process of document production and coordination. This BIM-enabled workflow determines a team’s ability to collaborate and deliver a product that will exceed the client’s expectations.

The built environment is fundamentally changing, empowered by innovation in virtual design and construction (VDC). The result is more-complex and increasingly elegant designs, as well as streamlined procurement and construction methods. This panel includes academic and industry leaders responsible for developing and implementing new VDC technology, including Hilda Espinal of CannonDesign, Ricardo Khan of Mortenson Construction, Forest Flager of Stanford University, and Danielle Dy Buncio of VIATechnik. The panel will discuss advancements seen on past and current industry projects in the areas of prefabrication, artificial intelligence, data analytics, virtual and augmented reality, and multidisciplinary design optimization. Panelists will use multimedia presentations and demonstrations to communicate the material to attendees to facilitate thoughtful and interactive discussion. Attendees will leave with a greater understanding of the impact that VDC has on project delivery and performance.

This class, based on a Government Datacenter project, is about BIM application to inform and demonstrate construction stage planning, integration of modularised engineering, and inputs from assembly and operational specialists. The goal is to achieve improved project delivery and safety with operational efficiencies while improving collaborative working and integration of SMART technology energised through BIM with Revit. The future of Built Environments lies in the uptake of new and emerging technology, and we are behind compatible industries like automotive and aircraft manufacturing. BIM is a key part of the journey; a catalyst for driving new performance standards such as the UK 2025 vision.

Verkís Consulting Engineers has gained various benefits from using BIM 360 Glue software. Before taking on BIM 360 Glue, coordination and clash detection of models was a time-consuming process that delayed project delivery. Project managers had less overview over the design process in BIM (Building Information Modeling) projects, and involving stakeholders in the BIM process was often unsuccessful. With BIM 360 Glue, Verkís has streamlined coordination and clash-detection processes involving designers in the cloud environment, shortening coordination meetings and delivering better-coordinated models in less time. Project managers have better overview and are more involved in the design authoring and coordination process. The use of BIM 360 Glue and virtual reality (VR) for design review has opened a new market sector for Verkís. In this class, we will present different benefits of using BIM 360 Glue with different design projects. Verkís is an Icelandic engineering firm that provides services in building, energy, industry, and infrastructure sectors.

As an innovator in improving construction processes, Skanska was an early adopter of BIM 360 Field software. Building on Skanska’s experience, the presenters will review a large project that used BIM 360 Field to augment information flow and quality control, and improve project delivery to the client. BIM 360 Field enabled full sharing of supply chain information across fabrication and jobsite to ensure a successful quality project for the client. This 1,550-spot parking garage was located in a tight urban locale and consisted of 1,486 precast concrete members. Using BIM 360 Field equipment and checklist modules, precast members were traced from fabrication, transportation, and installation. In using BIM 360 Field, the project and subcontractor team reduced the manual effort involved in collecting quality and logistics data. The presenters will also cover lessons learned, including the need for transparency, barcoding challenges, and ongoing user support.

The architecture, engineering, and construction industry is facing the need to provide the best design and engineering solutions within tight deadlines. Generative design is one of the most powerful approaches to overcoming this challenge by automating and exploring all possible design variations according to a set of design parameters. This class will show that generative design can be used for MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) design engineering. This class will use Revit 2019 software, Dynamo Visual Studio, and Project Fractal for MEP generative design. Specifically, you will discover how to create a ceiling plan via generative design, where the layout of air terminal devices and lighting devices will be automatically generated and explored. Moreover, we’ll explore thousands of design variations and coordinate them across disciplines by using Project Fractal. Hence, better design optimization can be accomplished in early stages, helping to make it easier to follow an integrated project delivery process and enhancing the decision-making process.
