This class covers The Ohio State University's transition from floor plans based on AutoCAD® software to building models based on Revit®-based software. During the past 2 years, we have created Revit models that cover 11 million square feet; our goal is to develop models for 35 million square feet by May 2016. In this class, we describe the initial project work to design standards and processes to ensure the long-term value of the models. We also discuss the evolution of the standards and processes during the project's maturation. We further describe how Ohio State has handled the challenges of managing a large portfolio of models by improving processes and using technology solutions to drive efficiencies into model building and maintenance. Attendees receive an overview of the BIM Toolbox that Ohio State uses in its efforts to drive adoption of Building Information Modeling (BIM) for existing buildings and in its development of BIM for design and construction.

This class will provide a case study of a project that contains many different disciplines, with civil being the main driver. We will go through the different challenges of integrating civil design using various workflows and software packages such as AutoCAD software, the 3D modeling app, Navisworks project review software, Revit Server, and Siteworks for Revit software. We will discuss the pros and cons of different file formats, and we will also learn some technical tips to help achieve certain outcomes for this example project. We will demonstrate the advantages and limitations of using the Siteworks for Revit software add-on, which will help inform you in the future when you deliver similar projects.

Much of the building industry still requires and relies upon CAD-based and sheet-centric project information delivery. The National Building Information Modeling Standard-United States (NBIMS-US) doesn't define graphical standards, so the United States National CAD Standard (NCS) is an indispensable reference standard for the foreseeable future. Several changes have occurred in the NCS and NBIMS for versions releasing in late 2014. NCS V6 has added a new Building Information Modeling (BIM) Implementation Section, and there are ongoing efforts to further develop new content. This round table gives attendees an overview of the new section and the opportunity to participate in further development. Attendees will identify common business challenges that the National Standards can alleviate and they will develop a list of effective practices to help make project delivery consistent throughout the building industry. We will make content from this session available to attendees, and it will become a basis for revision ballots to the National Standards.

This class will show you how to use database and data-interface techniques to check data interoperability between major Building Information Modeling (BIM) platforms (Revit software, for example) and structural calculation and analysis applications (Midas, for example)—all with the goal of highly improving the efficiency of structural design workflow. The practical techniques we will introduce include: using the parametric modeling method to build complex steel joints and quickly generate the whole structural model; using AutoCAD software to automatically generate 2D drawings for spatial structures; and using Navisworks project review software to build an integrated 3D visual model from a variety of model sources. We will also share the latest progress in 2 real space-structure projects—a large-span structure for a stadium and a 500-meters aperture spherical telescope. The above methodologies have been applied in these projects, and design data were smoothly brought into construction phase.

Creating a fully attributed 3D model to satisfy the BIM requirements of a project has become a requirement for many projects due to the BIM Level 2 government mandate. Current BIM software is primarily focused on architectural applications and overlooks the specific requirements of complex and large-scale landscape architecture (LA) and master planning (MP) projects. The talk will outline how we developed a script for Civil 3D to add additional attributes to C3D and AutoCAD objects; Surfaces, Blocks and Solids, the challenges we faced, and how we approached them. The class will follow our workflow on a 200 ha site for a major event, where we used C3D to create a BIM model for LA, lighting, and signage elements, importing them into Navisworks for clash detection and collaboration with other disciplines, such as civil engineers and architects. We will also cover the fundamentals of what attribute data was required, the rationale behind the choices, and how we managed data drops.

This session will focus on automation of BIM (Building Information Modeling) processes using data management systems and custom applications. The speaker will present the experience in optimizing and automating BIM workflow processes in infrastructure projects. He will share experience on smooth integration of Vault software in a current BIM workflow and existing systems. He will share the list of custom application and his experience of how Vault can have an important role in time-saving and quality improvement. The session will also include a discussion on how to incorporate all project parts in Vault, including customers and subcontractors.

In seismic regions, everyday structural engineers have to deal with rigorous and time-consuming rebar detailing to comply with code requirements for seismic design and local rebar detailing standards. Historically, this task was done in 2D detailing software like AutoCAD software, but today the industry is based on the BIM (Building Information Modeling) environment, and it's necessary to create rebar elements inside the Revit model. This class will show you how this approach was accomplished, continuing with a class presented at Autodesk University 2017-“BLD124825-Automatic Rebar Detailing of Wall-Based Buildings Using Dynamo and ETABS.” At that time, development was done in Dynamo, but to reach the desired productivity, the solution was migrated 100% to the Revit API. The goal of this class is to share the experience of the process, along with the stream of decisions related to geometry analysis and simplifications on rebar detailing with different local practice industry and seismic design standards.

A BIM/VDC kickoff meeting is a crucial (but often neglected) component on any multidiscipline/multifirm project. This session will give attendees a chance to build their own BIM/VDC coordination kickoff meetings. We’ll discuss and put together a one-size-fits-all type of agenda (to be used as a starting point for your organization) for a typical BIM/VDC coordination kickoff meeting. As part of this session, we’ll discuss who needs to attend, what topics need to be covered, how to track the information that is discussed, and how to best document the meeting itself. A final result of our discussion will be a group-sourced, distributable, BIM/VDC coordination document that works for any project type. This session is intended for BIM/VDC managers, BIM/VDC coordinators, BIM/VDC job captains, project managers, and anyone else typically involved in the initial project BIM/VDC kickoff meeting.

This session will explore the people, process, and technology initiatives of the 2 documents. We’ll also present the importance of educating the university’s staff on this new standard, as well as how to successfully implement the appropriate technologies and workflows, thus empowering the university to fully realize the opportunity to reduce the total cost of ownership of their buildings through the application of BIM.

Construction is still one of the most dangerous jobs in the world, with job sites being complex networks of people, equipment, and activity that are dangerous and ever changing. It is important for BIM/VDC departments to stay connected to drawings, submittals, and other information in order to identify any gaps and ensure that all necessary elements are incorporated in a model. Often, subcontractors coordinate against each other to produce layout and fabrication drawings for installation, and elements such as bathroom partitions, supports, metal framing, kickers/bracing, and owner-provided equipment are not included within the model for full coordination. This course will explore how VDC/BIM managers and coordinators can utilize supplemental modeling in their coordination efforts.
