This class will illustrate an integrated design and construction process achieved through using a more advanced method of the modeling and documentation of a curved stone wall for a courthouse building. 2D documentation of the complex geometries might not lead into the most efficient workflow between the design/construction team. The case study—Johnson County Courthouse in Olathe, Kansas—demonstrates using adaptive component families in Revit software to model, document, and construct a 40 foot by 440 foot curved stone wall with punched openings. This class will explain the modeling method of the wall in Revit, the documentation for the contactor, and the construction of the wall on the jobsite. Using an adaptive component family (Revit), different types of stone panels in the curved wall were modeled precisely according to design intent and were placed and repeated on the parametric rig. In this session, we will learn techniques and best practices for building our comprehensive, robust, and highly detailed curtain wall types of various common assemblies, appropriate for both the design construction documentation as well as manufacturer shop-drawing production. We’ll review how to build out not just traditional glazed assemblies, but also commercial insulated metal panel systems, flexible corrugated panel systems, and standing seam panel systems. Of all the design disciplines in the construction industry, landscape architects have been left behind the furthest by BIM. Too often, the BIM model of the building allows high-quality coordination but is let down when it comes to Landscape Architecture, going back to relying on 2D workflows. We at Gensler's largest Landscape Architecture studio based in London have been developing a workflow to work in BIM/Revit for the past 4 years. This presentation is a summary of the work that we have been doing, shown with real-world Landscape Architecture projects from around the world. We will show our end-to-end workflow for Landscape Architecture from concept to production documentation including how all the forms of documentation, including drawings, specifications, and schedules have been handled in Revit. We'll also demonstrate how we've been using third-party software such as ArtisanRV in our production process to further streamline our workflow. Through this presentation we hope to be able to demonstrate how Revit can not only be used for Landscape Architecture but how it can be integrated into the virtual design environment.
