The architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry is often put in the position to create engineering designs for several utility-related workflows. This design and engineering work is often done using Civil 3D software and is delivered as a stand-alone project via a set of design drawings. In many instances, the utility owner\operator takes that as-built data and drops it on a file server never to be seen again until it is needed. This transactional approach creates technical debt that places a burden on the utility and threatens the overall sustainability of the process. This instructional demo will work through a new way of supporting a sustainable collaboration and delivery model that aligns with the way of working preferred by owners and operators. Through the Autodesk \ Esri Alliance Partnership, we will illustrate some existing new methods to unlock the full value of a Civil 3D design drawing to populate and append an Esri ArcGIS Utility Network model that will support future design and engineering work in a sustainable manner.

At Southern California Edison (SCE), we have standardized and obtained efficiencies in our design and engineering processes by using AutoCAD Utility Design software as our transmission and distribution graphical design tool. This class will present the approach used to unify our design process using AutoCAD Utility Design, beginning with external work management through the workflow and ending with the validation of the design and bills of materials that are being sent to an external work management system. Along the way, we will discuss accessing external mapping/GIS and SAP® asset information within AutoCAD Utility Design and as well as the tool's ability to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements throughout the design process. With an emphasis on realizing the benefits of an IPSEC-based (Initiate, Plan, Schedule, Execute, Close) work order lifecycle, we will also discuss SCE’s solution to transmission and distribution design interactivity through our estimating and material ordering phases and our approach to eliminating the need for manual entry directly into our SAP enterprise resource planning systems (ERP).

The Trinity River Authority of Texas adopts a comprehensive wastewater management approach by seamlessly integrating InfoWorks ICM software with both network and plant model representations. This unique strategy enables the evaluation of more-holistic solutions, setting a new standard in the industry. Maya software has recently added some significant new tools for character rigging and animation. These include Offset Parent Matrix, which creates an entirely new way to think about rigging characters. New possibilities for data flow are the result of the Spec Driven P&ID feature introduced in AutoCAD Plant 3D 2017.1 software. Existing spec sheets can be used to facilitate the preparation of piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID). The interface between AutoCAD P&ID software and AutoCAD Plant 3D offers the possibility to connect the P&ID data with the 3D to let the data flow into it, or to run consistency checks between the P&ID and the 3D data.
