This class provides guidance for creating Revit software models that you can use effectively for facilities management. We will focus primarily on the creation of simple models that you can use as the foundations for facility plans to be used for space management, asset management, and maintenance. This class will focus on the basics, such as generating proper area plans, creating areas, and placing assets. We will also explore concepts including level of accuracy; level of development; and communication of your modeling needs to service providers who are creating models for you during the design, engineering, and construction process. We'll wrap up this session by connecting our model to a Computer-Aided Facilities Management / Integrated Workplace Management System (CAFM/IWMS) Solution so we can explore our results in a more traditional facilities management environment.

This class discusses the move from design to facility lifecycle management and explores the processes and best practices developed at Indiana University Health's Riley Hospital for Children and St. Vincent Fishers Hospital. As owners and facility managers, we are the ultimate customers, consumers, and caretakers of Building Information Modeling (BIM). We manage our buildings, grounds, and utilities for years and even decades after the designers and contractors have wiped their hands clean of the projects that built them. In spite of that, proportionally little emphasis is given to owners and facility managers when it comes to BIM. Most is focused on owners as customers of designers and contractors, rather than emphasizing owners as consumers and users of data. What BIM information does a facility really need? How is it integrated into a facility management program? How does an asset management program get stood up for a facility? How are renovations, partial facilities, and campuses integrated in such a program?

Facility management (FM) or 6D has been discussed as a huge benefit to owners, but very few owners take advantage of this because it typically requires significant forethought and investment prior to construction. We wanted to see we could implement this after construction. We’ll dive into a case study of a small 8,400-square-foot, net-zero structure, and look at several approaches to BIM-based FM. The study will also discuss what elements were deemed worthwhile tracking as opposed to those that were nice to have. We’ll cover how much effort went into creating a usable solution and what business models exist to support this. We’ll look at a self-generated approach using BIM 360 Ops software, a consultant-based solution (EcoDomus), and a vendor-based solution (syyclops). Based on the scale and type of project, we’ll discuss the merits of each solution and potential fits within the construction sectors. And we’ll have some value metrics and projected value over the lifespan of the building.

This class will present case studies of inventive Building Information Modeling (BIM) approaches adopted by 2 very different facility owners. Each one pushed beyond incremental BIM adoption to rethink workflows, develop BIM object libraries, and transform project processes. See results of their efforts presented from theoretical and practical perspectives. A large healthcare facilities owner integrates BIM libraries and standards throughout the project lifecycle. Their BIM library objects embody design requirements; data management protocols; local/global best practice standards to improve reliability and efficiency of BIM for design, delivery, and facility management with support; and additional capabilities such as 3D stereoscopic viewing, way-finding, and seamless data-sharing with facilities management (FM) applications. An international developer/operator shifts the focus of BIM organization from component-type hierarchies to elements representing installation and construction processes as performed on site, informing better cost and prefabrication analysis.

This class will illustrate and explain how using the various platforms of Revit software can help you to retool and upgrade your facility management process. We will examine how the third-largest pediatric hospital in the United States decided to change the “cradle to cradle” process of their design, construction, and long-term facility management process. High-quality facility drawings in AutoCAD software give organizations the information they need to assign, redesign, and reallocate space, whether for manufacturing or offices. When it comes to computer-aided facilities management (CAFM), there's one tool: AutoCAD. This class will show you the skills you need to use AutoCAD to calculate available area, understand which percentage is usable space, and export drawings and data for analysis and presentation. Concentrating on the basics, this class will guide you through a simple CAFM project, letting you learn at your own pace and develop your skills as you go. Shaun Bryant will show you how to set up drawings, define and measure areas, set up facilities area tables, and annotate drawings. By the end of the class, you'll be able to export the information to applications such as Microsoft Excel so that you can analyze the data in a tabular format.

Building owners are now utilizing Revit models and information created during design and construction to streamline their own operations. To successfully track and report on facilities data a method to reference “places” in the building is needed, particularly with respect to occupants and assets. By understanding the details of how space is used, facility professionals can reduce vacancy and ultimately achieve major reductions in real estate expenses. In this presentation we will discuss how Cloud-based facility management systems with real-time bi-directional integration to a portfolio of Revit models enables space planners and portfolio managers to analyze spatial performance across an entire facilities portfolio. We will also take a close look how Cloud-based Business Intelligence Tools (BI) and distributed secure access to all members of a facilities team can ensure the spatial consistency and quality of Revit model data throughout the lifecycle of a facilities portfolio.

Using BIM (Building Information Modeling) data lets facilities managers more effectively populate facilities management systems through data importation. In addition to this, IoT is having a significant impact on both locating and providing data about assets. This presentation will demonstrate how using Revit models with BIM 360 Ops software and iBeacons provides wayfinding for facilities teams, tracking of mobile assets, and better work-order management using heat maps of tickets. The sessions will include best practices, case studies, and lessons learned from pilot and active projects.

Traditionally, facility data was managed using paper drawings and post-it notes. The process then evolved to include CAD software like AutoCAD software and static spreadsheets. In today’s world, collaboration over the web has become commonplace. In this class, we will demonstrate how easy is it to publish drawings from multiple disciplines into a single intelligent model making it available for collaboration. Once published, the drawing is then sent to the Forge server where it is converted to a viewable file format. This file is then combined with the live data from the database to create an intelligent resource. Next we will demonstrate how changes made in an AutoCAD drawing can be republished and viewed using the Forge Viewer in faciliCAD Web Manager. Live data enables real-time collaboration. Last, we will show how changes made in the database information show instantly without the need to republish the drawing.
