This class is designed to give you an introduction to customizing Autodesk Navisworks 2013 software using the .NET API. It will cover how to create add-ins that sit inside the product and enable you to integrate with third-party systems, how to automate the product to perform process-intensive and repetitive tasks, and how to embed the .NET controls in your own application to take full advantage of the powers of Navisworks. There will be a specific focus on the new Clash and Timeliner API features. This class will benefit those who want to extend the functionality of Navisworks using a .NET language such as C#, so some programming experience is preferred.

This course will discuss the utilization of Revit software and Navisworks software on small construction projects (less than $10 million) where full-scale, 3D trade coordination is not feasible. Using real clients requirements for common infrastructure assets the class will demonstrate how property datasets can be structured for asset information delivery. The class will show how standards can be managed at a company level so that all project deliver consistently structured data and how the property data of common several Civil 3D objects can be extended to allow client specific attributes to be added to designs as they progress.

The class will then show how this data can be passed downstream to Autodesk Navisworks and how the Navisworks COBie Extension can be configured to deliver asset information either in COBie format as well as showing how the tool can be used to deliver based on bespoke client requirements.

This class will explore the workflows for dealing with storm and sanitary networks using Autodesk® Infrastructure Design Suite—from the planning phases in AutoCAD® Map 3D and AutoCAD® Civil 3D® software, the conceptual visualization in Autodesk® Infrastructure Modeler software, design in AutoCAD Civil 3D, and finally virtual construction in Autodesk® Navisworks® software. We will work our way through each product, covering basic introductions, file formats, import and export, and how to work with the objects in each format.

The AppBundle used for distribution is now being widely adopted by Autodesk products as a way to standardize the format across software products. It enables you to easily package an app or plug-in to be loaded in many different products and versions. It is the recommended format to easily bundle together the resources, and manage its description, configuration, and compatibility. We will cover the format and structure of it, and how it is being used by the App Store to distribute apps, plug-ins, tutorials, and content. We will learn the structure and properties of an AppBundle, keeping in mind that it is compatible with most of the Autodesk products, like Maya software, 3ds Max software, AutoCAD software, Revit software, Inventor software, Navisworks software, Fusion 360 software, and BIM 360 software. It is also the format adopted to run remote jobs with the Forge Design Automation API on the server side. This packaging practice is also beneficial for apps or plug-ins installed in local systems.

The course will cover the creation of a Construction Project utilizing as many Autodesk products as possible. We will start with InfraWorks 360 to demonstrate on the site selection, then utilize Map3D, Civil3D and Vehicle Tracking to build the infrastructure of the site. In parallel, we will demonstrate the use of Dynamo, Formit and Revit to build the Buildings and Structure of the site, and Plant3D, with Advance Steel to build the rest of the Plant. Also demonstrated will be Navisworks, BIM360 Glue and BIM360 Field to show a complete workflow of a project from initial concept phase to final project delivery and commissioning.

This presentation walks through various examples illustrating the benefit of augmenting 3D models with construction data. At the convergence of Laing O’Rourke’s Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) approach and its investment in BIM, component tracking has proven an efficient aid to the delivery of projects. The data visualisations enabled by linking planning and manufacturing data—both from our suppliers and our own off-site manufacturing facilities—with models provide a clear overview of the construction, for various disciplines. This allows us to detect issues earlier, plan further ahead, and reduce user errors. At the heart of it are agreed processes for ordering and tracking progress and flexible tools which can be configured easily to suit. Expanding on this, we’ve increasingly linked up new sources of data to models to visualise different sorts of information: non-conformity reports, fire safety checks, operation and maintenance documents, etc. The flexibility of the tools developed in-house for Autodesk Navisworks allow us to work with a wide range of data sources: spreadsheet, SQL based databases, planning programmes.

The unique form of the United States Olympic Museum requires a higher level of coordination between structure, framing, and skin than do most projects. An intense effort went into the detailing, constructability analysis, and fabrication of more than 9,000 unique metal panels. Quality assurance during construction is critical to allow for prefabrication and ensure everything fits together as anticipated, especially given the minimal tolerances required. With models coming from numerous platforms, Navisworks software has been used extensively to view the composite model and work through potential issues between trades. As stages of construction complete, a series of laser scans are being done to as-built conditions of the previous work sequence and to coordinate potential modifications to future work sequences required to work our way back to the final design surface. This process continues to evolve as construction progresses and we take advantage of lessons learned during installation.
