This seminar will cover design for digital manufacturing (DfDM) with a focus on additive manufacturing (DfAM). Capitalizing on the learnings from more than 1,000 projects posted on the You3Dit marketplace, we’ll walk our attendees through a DfAM process for translating customer needs into a design optimized for additive manufacturing, enabling performance, process, and product breakthroughs. We will describe high-level DfDM implications for common digital manufacturing tools, such as laser cutters, computer numerical control (CNC) machines, waterjet, and more. We will describe the overall DfDM process in the context of Fusion 360 software and how that workflow is optimized to support DfAM and other digital manufacturing technologies. Lastly, as a group we’ll create a set of design rules related to a new and powerful manufacturing process: “X.” The class will last 60 minutes, including 15 minutes at the end for questions and answers.

Underutilization stems from a variety of reasons, ranging from simply being uninformed or unaware, to misapplication while attempting to maximize existing cutting tools. The biggest area for improvement is the optimization of cutting tools, which can be done by paying closer attention to the various other manufacturing technologies at hand. Machine tool capabilities, materials being machined, and other manufacturing technologies—such as CAM programming abilities, high-pressure coolant capability, fixturing, small spindles (such as driven tools), and the like—should all be considered and used. No matter the reason, even the smallest of companies now have tools and technology at their disposal to assist in making better cutting tool choices while considering the manufacturing technologies. Autodesk has historically developed software and provided consulting services for metal additively manufactured (AM) lattice-type structures. Common powder-bed processes include SLM (Selective Laser Melting) / DMLS (Direct Metal Laser Sintering), and EBM (Electron Beam Melting). When considering real-life applications of these structures, many assumptions are made about the characteristics of the manufactured material. Among others, these include strength, elastic moduli, thermal properties, material density, surface finish, and structural stability. This class will describe the workflows that Optomec uses to translate CAD designs into printed features on existing parts or surfaces. We will cover specific additive-manufacturing challenges that are related to Aerosol Jet printing and how we have used Autodesk, Inc., packages to address our needs. We will further explore the subtle differences between additive and subtractive manufacturing and how Autodesk has worked to address the philosophical differences in an easy-to-understand way. Attendees will develop a deeper knowledge of the use of Autodesk products for additive manufacturing and how they can be adapted to suit their specific additive requirements. Attendees will also learn about the differences between additive and subtractive methodologies and how they apply to CAD and CAM (computer-aided manufacturing) development as a whole. When the concept itself or the concept designer cannot convey the idea or design to the engineer or manufacturing, it becomes the industrial designer’s job to walk the line between concept and engineering in order to convey the challenging concept to engineering and manufacturing. This class will not only explore personal experiences of a professional industrial designer working between concept and manufacturing, but will also identify key workflows or processes of how the industrial designer can communicate design concepts more effectively through communication techniques with engineering and manufacturing. This class is for anyone who would like to learn or have an understanding of the workflow and thought process of the industrial design industry and learn class-explained techniques and workflows to communicate concept and designs to others.

Many manufacturing companies have design engineering teams that are already "digitally mature." However, this is just a small part of the business when we consider every other function in the process of manufacturing parts. Consider that 70% of projects are still over budget or late, and up to 40% of engineering time is spent looking for the right files or information. This class will look at how customers are using tools—such as FlexSim, Autodesk Fusion Manage Extension, and Autodesk Fusion Operations—connected together to break down silos between departments, have change control over manufacturing BOMs and process definitions, and predict production issues before they arise. We will show how accurate simulation models based on real-world data can ensure projects remain on time and budget. And we’ll show how a connected data platform and change management platform can ensure data is well connected, reducing the time spent finding the right data.

Renowned for their high strength-to-weight ratio, carbon fiber parts are becoming more popular in traditional fields such as automotive and construction. Carbon fiber parts are created using additive-manufacturing processes and advanced techniques. Due to their high cost, efficiency is crucial to these kinds of parts. Autodesk, Inc., has created a manufacturing suite for the design, simulation, and manufacturing of composites materials such as carbon fiber. This platform will cover all of the production strategies that are currently in the market, including hand layup, fiber placement, and tape laying.
