VRED software is a renowned tool for automotive renderings and for virtual reality (VR) collaboration to review vehicle designs. Besides its popularity in automotive design, other industries such as manufacturing and engineering have been exploring VRED software's capabilities to showcase products, visualize workspaces, and test assemblies in 3D space. New to VRED 2023.3 is the ability to import metadata from CAD assemblies. Understanding how this extra data flows from one app to another may allow new ways for teams to communicate. This may include keeping track of dates throughout the project lifecycle and categorizing data for easier selection. Visualization designers can collaborate by sharing scene notes, transfer Microsoft Excel data into metadata tags, and convert physical texture sizes. They can work more efficiently, leaving scenegraph nodes unchanged and accessing metadata sets to make geometry and materials visible. Use cases for greater productivity along the digital thread connecting users are limitless.

Realistic light simulation is increasingly becoming more important to the design process, whether it’s used to support the design of a car’s head and tail lamp clusters, or to assess how lights can be distributed around the interior of a railway carriage to support brand identity, or to light a room in a building. This class with shed light onto these topics, describing how you can use the various features of VRED software to achieve different lighting effects. Among other topics, attendees will learn how to differentiate between the various ray trace modes and how to use light simulation data, and they will discover the importance of the realistic modeling of materials to the overall scene visualization. In this class we will work through a car lamp example with various significant design and engineering characteristics like LEDs, light guide elements, and multicomponent cover glass.

Autodesk VRED 3D visualization software helps designers and engineers create product presentations, design reviews, and virtual prototypes using interactive GPU ray tracing and both analytic and cloud-rendering modes. This session highlights the AWS Quick Start designed for IT infrastructure architects, administrators, and DevOps professionals who are planning to implement or extend their Autodesk VRED workloads on the AWS Cloud to enable realtime, virtual, design reviews.

This session will share details of a project called the VRED Session Management Service (VRED SMS). A prototype built by solutions engineers working together from Autodesk and Amazon Web Services (AWS), VRED SMS demonstrates how VRED 3D visualization software from Autodesk can be deployed and scaled on AWS in an on-demand way. VRED SMS allows applications that can interface a REST API to request a VRED collaboration session. Automated workflows execute to prepare the requisite instances and VRED configuration for a requested VRED scene file. This solution comprises a variety of AWS services, including but not limited to EC2 Image Builder, AWS Step Functions, AWS Systems Manager, AWS Secrets Manager, AWS Lambda, Amazon S3, Amazon DynamoDB, and Amazon API Gateway. It is also deployed using AWS Cloud Development Kit (AWS CDK). To automate the configuration of Autodesk's VRED software, this solution uses its Python and web APIs. The programmatic and workflow-driven nature of the solution makes it relatively simple to customize.

The presentation will show a live demonstration of the workflows used for creating an animation in 3ds Max software and in Maya software, including how to prepare them and export the data in order to import them into VRED software for doing a real-time visualization. The live demonstration will show examples of classic keyframe animations, cloth-like vertex animation, and character animation from 3ds Max software and Maya software to VRED software.

Alstom uses VRED Professional software to produce high-quality imagery for project communication, as well as real-time-experiences production for design reviews and communication movies, enabling a single-visualization digital mockup. Meanwhile, Alstom also needs to make sure its designs reach a broader population that includes external teams and individuals, and from this perspective, the communication production workflow is provided by Stingray game engine. This talk will describe the collaboration between Alstom and Autodesk, Inc., to build a VRED data workflow that capitalizes on Stingray game engine as an output source for their designs, consequently extending the reach of their project communication capabilities. AWS Deadline Cloud for VRED software is a fully managed, cloud-based, render management solution to burst high-quality rendering at scale. This easy-to-deploy and affordable solution supports VRED core and service-managed fleet (SMF) infrastructure—managed by AWS, requiring no IT commitments to configure, deploy, and maintain infrastructure and licensing. Customer-managed fleet (CMF) infrastructure offers end users the flexibility to use their existing on-prem hardware infrastructure or cloud-based environments to perform VRED rendering. Slides and live demos will illustrate how AWS Deadline Cloud for VRED can be integrated into an existing pipeline. This is illustrated through interfaces, including stand-alone tools, the Deadline Cloud API, and a render job submitter. Features highlighted will include grouping workers to fleets, assigning render job prioritization and scheduling, as well as monitoring progress through the Deadline Cloud monitor desktop application and AWS Management Console.

Design review sessions are an essential part of product development for everything from automotive to architecture to manufacturing. It is essential to bring together stakeholders and experts from all disciplines—including design, engineering, and manufacturing—early in the design process. Visualizing prototype designs in VRED software in real time has been invaluable in discovering potential issues and delivering better products on a faster cycle. We have developed a set of design review tools implemented in Python inside of VRED to enable work sessions to be more effective and create a documentation trail for concrete decision making without resorting to as much physical prototype construction. Using ray tracing, VRED can enable reliable review of design details, especially glass, mirrors, and metals. Real-time remote collaboration enables participation from far-flung departments around the world without requiring travel. This session will explore case studies and demonstrate these capabilities.

This year—2024—was a significant year for VRED software, marked by numerous enhancements and new features. We started with a comprehensive UI redesign, reflecting Autodesk's guidelines for a modern, intuitive experience. And we introduced improvements, such as multiselection property editing and searchable preferences, boosting speed and efficiency. We launched many new features, balancing technical precision and artistic freedom, providing a platform for visually compelling and accurate designs. In line with industry advancements, VRED integrated open standards, including IFC, USD for data exchange, and MaterialX and MDL for seamless material exchange across applications. VRED also introduced OpenVDB for volumetric data processing from simulation applications, and OpenXR for a wider range of hardware support, including hand and marker tracking capabilities. In this presentation, we'll guide you through the changes from 2024 to 2025, providing an overview of the key updates shaping VRED 2025.

This one-hour demo will show the design of a track shoe from sketch to render. We will show the process of sketching in Sketchbook and bringing the work into Alias software. Once in Alias, we’ll compare NURBS modeling workflows and how the new Subdivision modeling in Alias 2020 is better suited for concept modeling. The main portion of the demo revolves around how Dynamo, Sketchbook, and Alias work together to help designers ideate procedurally designed tread for the soles. Once the sole is complete, the shoe is brought into VRED software to create photorealistic marketing-level renderings.
